AMES 1554300 Long Handle Round Point Shovel

Gosh, what a nice shovel for the price. My last shovel was $30 and it broke. This looks about the same so if it breaks, I'll save about $24! This only problem with this shovel was that what looks like rivets connecting the metal cowl to the wood handle are actually just two little nails. They started to pop out as I was digging, allowing the cowl to spread apart which in turn alllowed the handle to wobble a bit inside the cowl Not good. Soooo .... I pulled out the two little nails, drilled a hole strait through the handle via the nail holes and slipped a spare bolt (from my copious collection of nuts and bolts) though the drilled hole and secured the bolt with a lock nut and washer. The handle is now firmly in place and the shovel has a nice sturdy feel. Although the nails are a design defect, I give the shovel 5 stars anyway because the defect is easily fixed and, for heaven's sake, what do you expect in a shovel for under $6?

Very nice shovel. Well made. Durable. Sharp point. Eagle makes good products. Use a pick axe if you have a too hard of a surface. Can`t beat the price. I don`t understand the bad reviews. The model I received is heavy duty. It would take a 300 lb. man to use all his strength to swing it against a rock to break it. And he`d never break it on the first swing.Contacted me by email by customer service to let me know if they could be of help in case it was unsatisfactory. GoBantu is the ones to buy from. The handle is round and smooth. The blade is heavy duty with a nice finish. The handle is thick and easy to grip. Maybe they sent me a higher priced model because this one is really heavy duty.

Was looking for a longhandled shovel since my friend broke mine last summer. This one was affordable and fit the bill. After I sharpened the front edge with a grinder it worked perfectly in cutting thru the roots of my hydrangea, and roses that needed transplanting. The only issue I had was the part where you will normally put your foot to force it into the ground was rolled like a pencil thus did not provide a stable nor comfortable surface.I suppose I can unroll it to a 90 degree lip but did not have the time to do it since rain was already upon me when I started digging. I believe this is more than enough for normal gardening duties.

I couldn't believe I could buy a shovel for this inexpensive. It does the job just fine - we dug up a bunch of bushes and a small tree in the front yard with this. Worked just fine, nice and sturdy. I see some reviews that say it fell apart or doesn't stand up to prolonged use -- I guess if you are in the profession or do work where you need to use a shovel daily, then maybe there are better or more ergonomic shovels, but for "annual" users like me that just do spring gardening in the front yard and a small veggie patch in the back, this worked better than fine. No complaints!

The shovel arrived today. For the price I paid for this shovel, I am extremely pleased with the quality. The handle is solid (although a little rough). I look forward to digging many holes with this shovel. Update: I moved a huge pile of dirt with this shovel and also dug out a large hole for a pond. I was impressed the shovel didn't snap or break in any way (and I have a habit of breaking my tools when I use them). I wore gloves when working in the yard, so the rough handle wasn't a problem. This shovel was ridiculously good deal for the price I paid. Around $5 and shipped for free with Amazon Prime.

Cost is great but the quality is low. My friend wasn't using it for its intended purpose while helping me dig out a tree. It worked decently enough on dirt but after giving a bit too much leverage against a hidden root the shovel split in two. I bought this to replace my girlfriend's older cheap shovel that I had imagined was on its way out, but it's still there and this one is done (second use).

Better than expected because the reviews mislead me. I bought this because it hit a low price point for a shovel. I was not expecting much. This is actually a great shovel with a wooden handle and a metal shovel portion. It is probably mid quality as far as shovels go. It does the job. I am very happy with it because it works for me and I was able to buy it for less than shipping probably cost for them to ship it to me.

Had this thing for 1/2 a season. I noticed that it wasn't as sturdy as my previous shovel (made by Ames), but overlooked the obvious because the thing was so inexpensive. It was working fine in the garden until I hit a medium sized root. The force was enough to splinter the handle where the wood meets the metal. I should have ponied up the extra $10 and purchased a decent shovel. Live & learn I guess...
