A surprisingly simple way for students to master any subject—based on one of the world's most popular online courses and the bestselling book A Mind for Numbers A Mind for Numbers and its wildly popular online companion course "Learning How to Learn" have empowered more than two million learners of all ages from around the world to master subjects that they once struggled with. Now in this new book for kids and teens, the authors reveal how to make the most of time spent studying. We all have the tools to learn what might not seem to come naturally to us at first—the secret is to understand how the brain works so we can unlock its power. This book explains: Why sometimes letting your mind wander is an important part of the learning process How to avoid "rut think" in order to think outside the box Why having a poor memory can be a good thing The value of metaphors in developing understanding A simple, yet powerful, way to stop procrastinating Filled with illustrations, application questions, and exercises, this book makes learning easy and fun. Review: A useful read about the tactics of how to learn effectively. - This book is a great read and full of study and memory recommendations for anyone at any age who wants to improve scholastic performance. There is also a FREE version of this material on Dr. Blakely's Coursera.com site for those who are not comfortable with reading in depth about how to learn. I took the free course and passed. Learned alot. Review: Best book of 2021 thus far! - I CAN NOT put this book down but also using the pomodoro technique with every view pages. I learned so much and have been teaching even my friends. I picked up this book because I saw Barb on a YouTube video then signed up for her course. I am a 41 year old adult and heck If I can learn this like a teen I can teach it to anyone. In love. I also incorporate the mind palace I learned to create with Ron White in his black belt memory course Brainathlete.com and using the Make it Stick for learning technique I read in the book Make it stick (blue cover). This is an incredible add to my continued improvement on my learning towards the 100 BIBLE verses goal for 2021. Everyone should buy this book written for teens but just as good for adults!!

techniques useful for learning
This book presents a summary of ideas that the authors believe are important for “learning how to learn”. It is supplied in a format that is intended to make children and teens feel comfortable. It is significant that the ideas for how to learn presented in the book have some scientific support, especially from neuroscience, Dr. Sejnowski’s focus. The style of the book is very warm and clearly communicates various techniques in a way that is not intimidating to the intended audience of young people. The illustrations and the “metaphors” provide a direct and non-technical way to make the discussion in the book meaningful. The techniques and perspectives for improving learning presented in the book are known to be effective, under certain circumstances, and have a general usefulness outside any particular field of study like English or math. I can highly recommend this book for young people, and also for their parents and teachers.

A fresh but Scientific view of the how we learn
I heard this author speak and really wanted to read the book. She has a way of explaining things that help me to remember. I actually bought the book because as a homeschool mom, it gave me clues on how my kids actually will best remember and learn what I teach. It's not a teaching method but rather an easy to read study on how are brains work and when we learn the best. Love this book!

Worth reading and giving as a gift
I purchased this for a nephew but also read it myself. Although some may say that many of the suggestions are obvious (to adults who have been through it), but I argue that even for adults being reminded of the importance and effectiveness of the obvious is critical. Focusing on processes that work and eliminating less efficient or completely ineffective (and distracting) methods of studying makes all the difference. Great gift to give to a young student or her/his parent.

Excellent, research-based book!
Excellent and relatable book for tweens and teens on learning how to learn. Filled with many actionable ideas (such as a test-prep checklist, a learning journal, and more), teens will find this book a valuable resource. The book is easy to read and understand, and it is research-based. Also provided are many other resources that students can access online. I highly recommend this book. Please mark if you find my review helpful. Thank you so much!

Literally one of the best well written easy to digest books I’ve ever read. The information is there and you can learn so much about how your brain, memory and “ Surfing Dolphin “ works, the exercise in the book works from day one and if you keep practicing you will end up surprising yourself! But don’t take my word for it get it read it and you will thank me later

Must have for 12 to 14 year olds
This book has great tips for studying and learning based on scientific evidence. I appreciated how well laid out the content was, and that it has broken up the material with relevant pictures, illustrations, called out boxes, and summaries. It is best if Red together with your teenager. This way, you can both learn and help them cement the knowledge that this book imparts. Application of the techniques is then much more likely to take place.
