Good Resource for Homeschooling or the Classroom
This book perfect for children who have an insatiable appetite for information. It explains how the digestive system works, how certain food items came into use (i.e. tea originated in China), the origins of different food products and the associated history from a U.S.-based perspective. This book will appeal to kids who like science but might be a bit too involved for elementary-age children who are below grade level in reading. It is nonetheless a great resource for homeschooling or the classroom, and the content will help and inform even their teachers.

Great book on nutrition
My 6-year-old is very curious about the building blocks of everything, including food. We've had nightly discussions about protein and sugar and balanced diets. I wanted a book that would go into more depth without being overwhelming. Are You What You Eat? fits the bill. I do not expect children to sit down and read this book from front to back. Like other DK books, information is separated into small sections, with multiple "sections" per page. This allows kids to jump around at their own pace and absorb the things they are interested in in the moment. I looked at a number of nutrition books for children before settling on this one. I read a lot of customer reviews and looked at interior pictures. I'm glad I chose this one. The book is well researched and based on science. I highly recommend it for kids 6 and up.

Quality Buy
Good book on nutrition basics for 6-12 year-olds. The information was prevented via both text and quality visuals. A great buy!

I had to wade through the muck to find the info
I don't love the format with facts popping up all over. It makes it difficult to sit down and read to my kids because it doesn't flow as well. I was hoping for a book to help my young kids understand why they need to eat healthy. I guess this is a little advanced-- closer to middle school level. Also, the first page springs the topic of evolution real quickly into your face, and so we had to have that conversation, which is complicated for me. Like, I am not completely convinced but also open to the possibility. It's just presented as fact here in this nutrition book, so that made it more difficult for me to read. Just wanted to show this page in case that's the case for you. I get why they covered it, but seemed a bit much for a kids' book. Soooooo, after that as you get deeper in-- about 4 or 5 pages-- I finally got to what I was looking for. And the pictures are nice and engaging. I guess they say not to judge a book by its cover? Because this cover made me think this would be a fun, easy read, and it got off to a real slow start and did not hold for my kid's attention span.

I got this for my extreme picky eater, who hates talking about food, but is very interested in human anatomy. The pictures and layout of the book are really eye-catching, and it packs a lot of information into every page, without having big blocks of text. I love that the book is about food but isn't focused on eating, but rather how food works and what it does for us. The whimsical mixed-media style pictures are very well done and keep my son reading and re-reading his favourite pages. I really can't rate this highly enough.

Got this for my 4 year old to encourage healthy eating behavior but realized very quickly that you'd is for older kids. Contains very complex, detailed information.
