I want to use my tv remote to power the bose on and off and control the volume.  will the optical connection do this, or do i have to use hdmi?

I was able to connect the Bose mini sound bar via optical to my Samsung TV and set it up to use my Comcast remote to manage the sound bar (volume and mute). I found the code on the Xfinity website, and followed their instructions to program it AFTER having used settings on my Samsung tv and chose the optical device as my output. I don’t think I can share the Xfinity link here but any search engine will get you to it. I believe 31933 was the 5 digit code that worked for our X-15 remote. Hope this helps!

Can you use with a sub woofer?

Bose will tell you that you can only use their TV speaker with a Bose 300 or 700 sub woofer While that is largely true, you can use your Smart TV audio output in conjunction with any other sub woofer brand that will accept a digital/optical input. Connect your smart tv to the Bose TV Speaker using the HDMI/ARC input. Then, separately connect the other brand subwoofer with the optical cable directly out of your smart TV. In the tv's settings menu set the optical output to PCM (pulse code modulation) and you will have sub woofer sound. I, personally use a Bestisan Deep Bass Sub Woofer sold by Amazon for approximately $ 79 (cheap, compared to $ 300/- for the Bose) and it works fine. It also allows you to set Woofer volume and bass frequency separately. I am taking the time to write this out in detail because i am against brands with proprietary technology that just want to take your money. Everything should be open systems in today's technology!
