The pellets are supposed be reused for up to 70 loads, so you'll need something to hold the pellets, so I suppose you could use something else other than the egg.

Is this okay to use in a top load washing machine?

I have been using this egg in a top loading machine and it cleans my laundry well.

Could pellets be placed in the clean water tank of a toilet to help keep the toilet bowl rim clean?

I would NOT do this. The pellets do no dissolve or do so very slowly. The pellets could become wedged and cause damage to the inner workings of a toilet. Buy something specifically made for this purpose.
