It works surprisingly well. We have only used it once so far as we received it about 1 month ago. Our only lesson learned thus far is that when you place the bowl in your freezer, it needs to be a deep freeze. The colder the bowl is the 'colder/ harder' the ice cream will be. Our bowl was in a normal freezer overnight. We then had the mixer on a countertop in our home (76 degrees room temp) to make the ice cream. We found that the ice cream was extremely soft and started to actually get softer while we were waiting for it to get harder. The reason is that the bowl is what is freezing the ice cream. The moment that you remove the bowl from the freezer is starts to warm or thaw. So the colder that the bowl is to start and the faster that you get the ice cream started, the better chance that it will be a colder/ harder result. Hope this helps. Over all though we were very pleased and happy with the purchase.

How does this compare to stand alone ice cream makers, which are generally at this same price point?

This does not stand up to a free standing machine. I got it for small batches and it was simply not the same and it was quite expensive for what it is. You cannot make ice cream in a whim either since you have to freeze the bowl for 12-24 hours. I would out the money toward a free standing machine.
