Review: Great for guided reading sessions - These books by Linda Ward Beech are great for focusing on actually understanding text - I work with classes and individuals as a teacher in KS1 and 2 in the UK and recommend these from Year 3-4.They would be good 'day-starters' or during guided reading sessions if using lower levels than indicated on the cover, for independent work. Try also : Context Clues (Reading Passages That Build Comprehension) Context Clues & Figurative Language: 35 Reading Passages for Comprehension ect. She also writes on other comprehension focii Review: Absolutely relevant text!! - Very much age appropriate.

A great way for kids to boost their vocabulary
I chanced upon these Scholastic series of book focusing on core reading skills and have found them to be very useful. My seven-year-old daughter actually enjoys working on the exercises because the passages are short and interesting! The questions are well-designed and help young children, Grades 2-3 build skills in the area of vocabulary, specifically vocabulary in context. Each page contains two short passages and each passage has a question about a highlighted word. The student needs to identify which meaning is closest to the highlighted word in the passage. This is a great way to get children to improve their vocabulary. The passages here are both fiction and non-fiction and are generally interesting. I recommend all the books in this Reading Passages That Build Comprehension series. There is also an answer key at the end of the book. This can be used for independent as well as guided practice.

Bubbled answers
Love that the answers require students to bubble their answers . I teach ina sped setting and my students do paper district and state testing that requires filling in bubbles . Passages allow for comprehension practice and testing preparation
