Does not take batteries. Use a 12 volt battery and an inverter or supply it the dc voltage that the power supply provides it with batteries. You will just have to figure out how long they will last without a charger or put a solar charger on it. Depends on your particular situation.

The controller isn't waterproof, you can put it into a box.

Does it stay ON all the time or does it time out and turn off? Does it remember values through powee cycle?

It stays on but screen dims to sleep but function continues. Not sure if function continues with interupted power. Did not test. Program and calibrations are safe.
