Does this self tanner smell?

No it doesn’t, but a tip from me would be put a drop in the palm of your hand with some moisturiser and mix it in and then apply it to your face, it will go on more even.

I’m fairly light skinned. Is it better if I get light/medium or can I get medium and just use less? Thank you.

I have used both 'medium' and 'med.dark'. I am also light skinned and if I was choosing, I'd go for 'med.dark' and use less of it. I don't recommend a large bottle as it didn't keep too well. The colour in bottle faded, and it's strength deminished, ended up using more to get same colour. I would buy again, I like the benefits it gives to my skin. The natural ingredients may not keep long but it improved the quality of my skin. I'd buy the darker of the two colours and use less.
