How hot is it?
I wish people could see what we had to do back in the 70's to use thermocouples. I got this 10 years ago as a general purpose thermocouple thermometer. Not something I use every day, but so far, it's worked whenever I do. I've worked in automation and controls for decades. Thermocouples are all over the place. They are generally assumed to be accurate within a couple of degreees without individual calibration. K type couples are inexpensive and easy to get. From measuring heatsinks to checking my fish smoker to HVAC and refrigeration work, this is a handy piece of gear. Applied properly, I have no complaints. Better than I expected for what I paid. Recommended.

Surprisingly good - UPDATED
Right from the box I ran through the settings of probe type (=K), and Temp scale (=F) - very simple to do, and all settings remain as they were at last power-off. The room temperature initially read 73.4F and 79.1F, but after 30 seconds or so, they settled down to readings of 70.1F and 70.1F. Over the next half an hour, one reading or the other would briefly move up or down by +/- 0.1 or 0.2, but always returned to 70.1. During this time, I cycled the power every few minutes to see how the meters started back up. There was only a second or two of settling time with each power-up. I left the probe ends in place, close together and weighted down to the floor by a book. Handling the meter body had no effect on the readings. Unplugging and switching the probes made no difference. Comparing to my trusted Fluke 80T probe I have used since 1982 or so (and was last calibrated in 2007), the Fluke measured room (floor) temperature reading is 70.0F. Based on my experience with thermocouple probes supplied with various multimeters I own , this is extraordinarily stable and precise, as well as accurate at at least one point. This result is not something anyone should expect from a mass-produced thermocouple thermometer - especially an inexpensive one. Probably I was just lucky - but at least it shows that such performance is possible from this instrument. I plan to make accuracy tests with an ice bath and with boiling water, and tracking precision tests with refrigerants such as CO2 and with a hot air gun. I will use a variety of probes as well as the ones supplied. I think it highly unlikely that the two probes will track so perfectly over a wide range of temperatures, but this single point test is encouraging. I will update this review after I perform further testing. **** UPDATED**** I did some further testing, using the probes supplied. I twisted the probe ends together so they would be in the same environment. In an ice water bath The two probes read 33.8F and 34.1F after stabilizing for about 2 minutes. In my home freezer (set for -5F), The probes read -5.1F and - 4.8F. In boiling water, they stabilized at 211.7F and 211.1F. I tried to read my oven, set to 300F, but I couldn't get a stable reading. It turns out that the oven cycles on and off fairly frequently, and the temperature swings high, then low as it does and the probes can't keep up. Manufacturing variations result in the sensing beads on the two probes being visibly different in size - about 2:1 in diameter. The larger bead is much slower to settle than the smaller bead. As the temperature is swinging up and down, the difference in readings becomes large, only settling once the temperature becomes constant for a minute or so. Probably by selecting two thermocouples from the same manufacturer's batch that have nearly identical junction beads, the probes would track well. I ordered a set of ten probes to use in that way.

Great For the Price
I purchased this thermometer to take temperature measurements around the house and just to have a toy to tinker around with. I am not using it for any industrial or scientific purposes that require super high accuracy. If that's what you want, then you need to spend the money necessary to achieve that (i.e go buy a Fluke). You're simply not going to get that for $17. After I opened the box, I decided to test the accuracy, so I put a pot of water on the stove and brought it to a boil. I stuck the leads in the center of the pan (without touching the sides or bottom) and both leads read 209.1ยฐF and stayed there. I checked the barometric pressure (since the boiling point of water varies with pressure) and I determined that the water in my area should boil at 211ยฐF. So, I figure that this thermometer's accuracy is within 2ยฐF to 2.5ยฐF, which is good enough for me. Sure, I wish it was reading dead on accurate, but the good news is that both leads read exactly the same in the boiling water, so there's no variance at all there (like is the case with some cheap thermometers that give different readings on the different leads). Pros: Cheap Fairly accurate Both leads read exactly the same during the boil test (209.1ยฐF). Nice buttons Decent build quality Does min/mean/max readings Has a hold function Can use almost any type of thermocouple (K, S, E, J, etc.. etc..) Cons: Inaccurate by around 2ยฐF The backlight cannot be controlled, it only comes on for a few seconds after a button press. I would like the option to turn it on for as long as needed or for it to have a longer cut-off time. Has a cutoff of around 3-4 minutes (I didn't check exactly). Sometimes cuts off right in the middle of a reading which is annoying. Cannot be calibrated and you cannot create offsets (i.e. you can't do manual error correction by adjusting it to a known temp). Overall: The pros outweigh the cons and it's definitely worth $17. This thermometer is made in China and no other developed country would be able to produce a thermometer like this that retails for $17. So, all of us in the west should take advantage of China's generosity before they develop further and their people begin demanding 401K's, $40 an hour, full medical and dental, and pension plans like us Americans. It will happen at some point, so get while the getting is good.

Great tool for tracking coffee roast temperature!
I purchased the Leaton Digital Thermocouple thermometer to measure my coffee bean temperature while roasting. In order to make a repeatable roast, monitoring the temperature at different stages of the roast is important. The Leaton Thermocouple thermometer works perfectly to track temperature during a coffee roast and allows me to duplicate my results. When I find a roast that I like with a particular coffee bean, I write down a recipe that includes time stages of the roast (drying, first crack, start of second crack, etc.), actual minutes into the roast, and temperature at that point in the roast. The temperature is important because you want the bean to roast and not bake. Each variety of coffee beans roast differently, and establishing a good recipe for each variety takes time. Being able to repeat the results closely saves time and money. The Leaton Digital thermometer comes with two thermocouples, which works well straight out of the box. There is no need to purchase thermocouples, unless you would like a longer probe to use. If you are a home coffee roaster, the Leaton Digital thermometer might be something that you can use to fine-tune your roasting recipes.

These are duds. Don't waste your time buying one.
I figure for the price it was worth a shot. Like other have said this meter is completely unreliable. It could be 5 to 20 degrees off from the actual temperature and the spread would vary depending on how hot it got. It was even worse if you try to use both channels at the same time. Channel one definitely seemed more reliable than channel 2. The auto off was annoying. I'm thinking it must be 50/50 shot with quality control and I got a dud. I will be returning.

Easy to use and self-explanatory. Fast delivery
I was looking for a relatively inexpensive temperature gauge where I could monitor line set temperature on AC systems. Add a set of clamps to the setup and it is super-easy to use. The price is good and it works as designed. It is easy to switch between Centigrade and Fahrenheit, so it is easy to adapt to your needs. Recommended product and company.

Good at price, suggestions to be better
For the price my expectations were low, and at first I was ready to send back since it seemed the temperature was several degrees off. It comes with the K thermocouples and 3 AAA Batteries. However, I noticed that once the unit was on for few minutes (~5 minutes), the accuracy was within 1/2 of a degree (F) at room temperature. It appears it needs a few minutes to โstabilizeโ. I plan to use it for HVAC work, however, Iโm a DIYer, so it wonโt get daily use. It would have been nice to have a hanger on this unit which it does not have. A case would have been nice too.

Very inexpensive, works well, seems accurate
Worked with temperature probe I bought, was able to compare measurements with Arduino input. seems pretty accurate. For more durability, add a metal-cable probe as the default probe is not suitable for high temperatures like ovens, etc.

Works very well and is easy to use
Works very well and is easy to use. The plugs are a tight fit into the machine, a bit too tight but better than too loose and dropping out. All in all a very good thermometer.

Moyen
Pas precis, erreur de 1 degre voir 1,2 ....a voir avec d'autres thermocouple, ceux la sont de faible qualite...je ne n'attendais pas de miracle pour le prix....si encore on pouvait le calibrer....mais non....
