Rainy Afternoon Engineering
The sky opened up hard while I was hosting the young ones at the beach house, so we hunkered down and cracked open this mousetrap car kit instead of scrolling on tablets, which are basically banned when I'm in charge. Guess what-- they love it. But also guess what, that means I get to be engaged with them rather than doing the same thing myself. As adults we have to take the lead in this. So anyways, it was exactly the kind of hands-on distraction I wanted—two complete builds in one box meant the nephew and niece could each have their own rig to tweak and race. We grabbed a pair of pliers to yank the staples off the traps, adjusted the leverage points on the sticks, and spent the next hour arguing over traction versus speed. Watching them watch the cars convert stored energy into motion across the hardwood floor was satisfying enough, but hearing them ask why one car spun out while the other zoomed made the whole thing worth it. My girl walked in midway through testing, saw the hallway turned into a drag strip, and just shook her head laughing. It kept them engaged without feeling like a forced lesson, which is the hardest thing to pull off with kids under ten. Instructions ran a bit dense in places, bundling multiple steps into single lines so you have to decode a few diagrams before snapping pieces together, but adult supervision fixes that gap fast. The mousetraps themselves are functional but require care—spring tension is real and safety matters around little fingers. That said, the components held up to repeated crashes into the baseboard without snapping, and having two kits means less fighting over parts during race day. Five stars because it solved a weather emergency with something genuinely educational. Sometimes the best lessons happen when you're too busy competing to realize you're learning.

Missing Parts!!
I ordered the kit of 10 for a class project. I made kits of all the parts and distributed to students only to realize after that the kit didn't come with any of the metal axles needed for assembly. Very frustrating! I returned the first kit and ordered a replacement kit which did have all of the parts.

Needs better directions. Assembly was confusing. Once built the kids had fun but it took awhile

More Than a Toy, This Is a Real STEM Build Kids Feel Proud Of
I ordered this 2-pack Mousetrap Car Kit so both of my grandsons could build one when they come over to Honey's house. We have been trying to do more hands-on projects instead of just screens, and this felt like a great way to sneak in some real learning while still having fun. What you get are true build-it-yourself kits, not pre-assembled parts that snap together in five minutes. The frame pieces, wheels, axles, dowels, string, and mousetrap all come separate. The instructions walk you step by step through assembly, including removing the trigger parts of the mousetrap before attaching it to the frame. As a grandma, I was honestly relieved to see that clearly stated. I did hesitate a bit when ordering because of the mousetrap component, but knowing the trigger pieces are removed by an adult before assembly gave me peace of mind. The box clearly states “Warning: Small Parts,” notes it is not meant for children under 3 years old, and mentions choking hazard. The ideal age per the directions is 8 and up, which I feel is appropriate given the small components and the need for some patience during assembly. The build itself really demonstrates force and motion in a way kids can see and feel. They wind the string, release it, and watch stored energy turn into movement. Instructions are severely lacking and low quality materials
One sentence summary: Vague instructions severely lacking as a step-by-step, adult assistance required or older kids, and low quality materials. Extended summary: Typically with kits designed for kids to build it themselves the instructions are comprehensive, easy to follow, and step-by-step - This is NOT the case with this kit. A single page front and back of compounded build instructions/actions (that is multiple build steps without pictures in one "Step") leaves the builder filling in the gaps to figure out themselves. Sure it can be done but a better approach, especially for kits designed and marketed for kids, is a step-by-step instruction set with simple, single build actions/instructions that are supplemented by photos. A prime example of the annoyance with the instructions is Step 5 clearly shows Step 6 already completed leaving a kid to wonder if they missed a step - The "What came first, the chick or the egg?" questioning attitude commences. Lastly for a build kit to be enjoyable at the end of the build evolution the materials used for the kit must be effective and resilient for kids to at least play with and have fun. The included mouse traps are of the lowest possible grade of quality, not to mention a SAFETY HAZARD for kids requiring adult assistance or supervision. Additionally the double sided adhesive is not even a name brand but super thin, not so adhesive "tape" if that's what it's trying to be. In the end I expected better out of a 2-pack STEM kit for the money, so while the concept is there it has too much lacking for it to be of value without careful guidance/assistance to avoid frustrations.
