Watching her unbox this beautiful 18-inch doll was a genuinely fantastic experience, as the sheer level of craftsmanship and attention to detail immediately blew us both away. This is a really nice Ariel doll with excellent overall quality. The details are well done, from the wavy red hair and aqua eyes to the little sea themed accessories. The outfit has lots of small decorative touches that make it feel more special than a basic doll. The doll itself feels sturdy and well made. The movable arms, legs, and head make it easy to pose, while the soft body gives it a different feel from an all vinyl doll. It comes nicely presented with the accessories, and it makes an excellent gift.

I spent a lot of time as a kid watching the classic Disney fairytale cartoons, and rediscovering my American Girl dolls from childhood recently turned me into a full-blown AG collector, so it was really fun to get a chance to review this doll! I went back and forth for a while on getting Ariel, and now that I have her, she’s lovely. She’s got the Nanea face mold which I love to see more of, and her eyes are a gorgeous deep aquamarine blue that perfectly suits a mermaid. Her hair is a true bright red and she comes with a cute flower hair clip, and her swoop of bangs really reminds me of how Ariel’s hair moved in the cartoon movie. Ariel’s dress is cute and reasonably well made—it’s not quite as true to the cartoon as some of the other Disney Princess dolls’ dresses are, but it’s cute. The wig seems to be good quality. And as usual for AG, the limbs and body construction are solid, with solid stitching and full stuffing in the cloth body and tight elastic in each joint that lets you pose and move her as you’d like. I’ve restored a lot of American Girl dolls over the years and they really are well made. They can hold up really well over many years if they’re cared for, and the components are solid enough to make repair and restoration worthwhile if they get a bit too much play time. (Also worth noting: I’ve tried a few non-princess outfits on Ariel since I got her, and especially if those outfits have red elements? She looks stunning. FYI.)
