These are washable, can be used a long time (attach to insole of shoe, not onto foot!)
I get the thicker version (1/4"). It seems to help my metatarsal pain, felt an improvement right away. Be sure to position the broad edge at the TOP, narrow 'point' at the bottom, and also the pad should be positioned a bit below the ball of the foot - the ball of the foot should not rest ON the pad (according to my podiatrist and everything I've read as well). I make one pad last a long time, by attaching it to the insole (? I mean the removeable insert pad that comes in a shoe, or that you buy separately for a more supportive one). The pads are made out of some type of felt, and are totally washable. I wash my insoles anyway when they start to get dirty, just in a bucket with warm water and soap, squeezing the suds through, rinse and hang to dry. Works fine, the pad gets clean and fresh, and so far the adhesive has held up completely. To me the edges of the thick version are too 'square' - not tapered - and so a bit uncomfortable, so I trim that hard-corner edge into a tapered edge using a sharp pair of scissors (before I apply the pad to the shoe - while its still on that wax-paper base it comes on). Easy-peasy, and a semi-permanent fix in my shoe.

Metatarsal pain gone.
Seems odd to write a review for such a simple, inexpensive product. But these pads are the bees knees. If you have metatarsal pain, a burning sensation under the outer part of the ball of the foot, these things may well save you hundreds if not thousands of dollars in custom shoes, orthotics and doctors. Placing in the shoe correctly is a bit of a guessing game, because you don't place them directly under where the pain is, rather behind that area towards the arch. There are a lot of youtube videos that can help you. The general opinion seems to be to place the front edge of the wider part of the pad right behind where the nerve being impinged is. That way that part of the foot is elevated off of the sole of the shoe, relieving the pressure on the nerve. I put them in every shoe that I wear. Since I only have pain in one foot, a 12-pack of these pads gives me 12 pairs of comfortable shoes. Highly recommended.

Too thick for my use
Purchased these based on my podiatrist recommendation. The quality is good and they adhere well to my orthotics. One less star because they were much thicker than I needed and were uncomfortable. 1/8" might have been better (if it exists).

Work Well if Positioned Correctly and can be Reused
I am 64 and spend a lot of time on my feet or have so more recently, and my foot pain as increased over the last few months. I am also a stair master junkie and have been for many years so it's no surprise I have issues with foot pain in my later years. Until I did some research on foot pain I did not know these pads even existed. I have worn them now for a couple of weeks and I have noticed some improvement and during that time I has been on my feet most of the day. I have also taken to some hot foot baths with Epsom salt every now and then too. The only real issue I have is the stickiness wears out after one or two uses. I had taken to using medical tape to put them on and then just started sliding them under my socks before I put my shoes on they seem to stay put. So as a long term solution I am not sure if these are the way to go or not. As a means of just testing to see if they offer some relief for you, I would definitely recommend these. Then if they help you can look at one of the more expensive but more reusable options out there. Update Nov 11th 2020 I have been using these on an off for a while now and they do seem to work. I did a little research on the placement of these pads and from what I see most of the more permanent solutions put the pad right on the ball of the foot. Based on what I have learned they are better used just below the ball of the foot - so more at the top of the arch area. So considering that, I think these are a better solution because they allow more flexibility in placement than one of the more reusable types. When I started using them positioned "correctly" I really started to notice a difference. Recently I tried wearing one on only one foot before running and the difference was very noticeable. Not just after running but while running as well. Also, I found they can be re-used quite a few times. As I mentioned previously, you just need to put your socks on first and slide them into place from the side. Once your shoes are on and you add a little pressure they stay in place just fine. I have re-used them many times (10+) before they stopped sticking. Even then they stay pretty much in the right spot even without the stick.

OK, but too thick for my purposes
These seemed to be a reasonably good value compared to some of the gel/ foam metatarsal pads that I'd seen in stores, which tended to be $4-$5 per pair. But these felt pads are quite thick-- too thick for my purposes. They aggravate my metatarsal pain unless they're absolutely perfectly positioned, and even then it's not a great feeling. On the plus side, they stick reasonably well and I've been able to unstick and reposition them a few times without losing too much stickiness. But it's just not been a comfortable experience. Your mileage may vary.

Great find for foot comfort
These are great for adding support for your arches. I stick mine on the bottom of the removable shoe insole. It is easier to peel back off to move it. I have stopped buying orthopedic insoles and only use these. There is a learning curve to get the placement just right, but they do make shoes more comfortable. I also like to trim them and stick them in the heels of some of my shoes that rub.

Life Changing Product - 10 Stars!
These pads changed my life. This is NOT hyperbole! Long story short, my foot started hurting six months ago. It was debilitating to my exercise routine, which is not extreme, but essential for my health. Basically, indoor walking on a treadmill and an elliptical, along with some outdoor walking. I had to completely stop due to pain in my right foot. I thought it was just sore and would heal on its own. Never happened. My primary care doc sent me for an xray. Nothing. Let it sit for a couple of months before going to a specialist. More xrays and finally a diagnosis. She gave me a felt metatarsal pad and said I could find more on Amazon. I purchased these and placed them in all my various shoes. I'M BACK!!!! My foot feels great, just like before this chronic pain started. Highly recommend!! I was very skeptical that these pads would do anything for me. I was wrong!

These are made of felt!! Not soft
Pinched these between my fingers to see how soft they would be and NOPE not even going to try putting these in MY shoe and likely end up with more ball of foot pain. Felt returned.

I shouldn't be surprised how good but I am!
I stuck these to the sole of my foot and was amazed at how instantly the pain of my 4th metatarsal was relieved. It took 20-30mins of trial and error to get the exact right size, shape, and location, ultimately a small egg shape about 50x25mm placed 10mm posterior to the sore metatarsal. 2 of these can be made out of each pad and you get 12 in a pack. I did a 6km run and was 100% fine. I left it on in the shower and it dried overnight and worked for the following 24hrs. The proof will be the marathon this weekend. Not sure if I will continue to stick to my foot or will try sticking to the insole but I'd imagine the glue would be quite damaging to the insole when you try to replace the pad because it's so strong. I'm hoping that after the marathon I can reduce the mileage and the need for these.
