it disintegrates down sink drain as it ages, want to know if it's environmentally-sound. can't find any info on this. is it bad like microbeads?

I've never had it disintegrate or break apart. I think it's a great little cleaning scrub tool.

You need to take in account the quality, durability and effectiveness of the product which is way far better of the regular sponges. Scrub Daddy is great.

If you don't have a dishwasher, can you wash it in a washing machine or will that shorten its life?

You can wash Scrub Daddy in the laundry or dishwasher. Depending on humidity, it dries in a few hours sitting out on the counter (faster if standing on edge). It will biodegrade over time so it doesn't hold all the bacteria and odors that normal sponges do.
