Excellent out of the box
I recently tried a different brand of earbuds to replace my aging (20y+) UE 130s (if they still made them, this would have been my choice, but Logitech took over & 😖). They were not great, but near identical price to the Final E5000. Gave up after a day. They sat too deep in the ear & you could never get the same sound twice, because the position was slightly different. Also, were uncomfortable. So, to get to the E5000. Straight out of the box they sat nicely in the ear, not too intrusive. The sound quality was excellent (& I understand from audiophiles that they should improve with extended use.), great bass without swamping the high frequencies. I did replace the stock silicone pads with comply, because they are so comfortable. Any downsides? They are heavier than the UE’s, no real surprise because they have stainless steel bodies. This has not manifested itself in use. These are very good. I am happy.

Final E500 - The New Budget Kings!
The audiophile universe is governed by the laws of diminishing returns. You could spend thousands of dollars on all sorts of ‘end-game’ toys for your ears and still yearn for something better. Or worse, that headphone you bought for 3000 dollars two months ago is now on sale for half that price. And so it goes. Unfortunately my wallet is not as cavernous as some, so I have to settle for budget-fi wherever possible. Every so often a product comes along that shatters the price to audio-excellence barriers - and leaves many an audio nut dumfounded how something that sounds so good can be so cheap. My first foray into awesome sounding headphones for teeny-weeny money was my purchase of the Koss KPH30i. Which for a long time I have regarded as the best value-for-money headphone in hi-fi. It’s not the most comfortable on-ear headphones, nor is it the best built - but for less than 30 dollars I found it’s balanced, detailed, resolving, yet fun sound signature hard to beat. That was until these Final E500 IEMs arrived on my doorstep. I bought the Final E500 from Amazon in the UK - it’s not available in the USA. At a mere £19.99 I believe it is the most affordable product that Final Audio from Japan makes. To put it into perspective - their D8000 Planar Magnetic headphones will set you back well over $4,000! Final Audio have been making high-end audio products since 1974, and are no doubt regarded with high pedigree in the audiophile community. So, for less than 20 Pounds Sterling, I thought I had nothing to lose with these headphones. And I was right. They come in a little white box with 5 pairs of (different sized quite excellent) colour-coded silicone tips - that’s it. Inside the E500’s ABS thermoplastic tubular housings are Final’s own 6.4 mm dynamic drivers. I might be mistaken, but I believe these are the same drivers used on their much more expensive E4000 model. The rubberised cable is attached and terminates in a 90-degree 3.5mm gold-plated plug. The design of the housing is based on many of the other of Final’s popular E-series IEMs - so it’s a tried and tested design. To be honest, I’m not a huge fan of IEMs, but these little light-as-a-feather wonders from Final are really comfortable in my ears for long periods of time, and can be even used for side-sleeping with. Note that there is a fair amount of cable noise if you touch the cables or if they rub against your shirt - but that sound disappears once the music starts. So, to the sound. Simply, wow! I couldn’t believe how incredible these sounded from the moment I started listening to music on them. They have a warm-ish V-shaped sound signature, with a relatively wide soundstage and incredible imaging. Stunning bass, luscious non-fatiguing highs and a beautifully defined midrange make these truly enjoyable to listening to music on. The feeling of immersive surround sound that you get from these is outstanding. The immediate feeling I got was that these were like the IEM version of my fantastic Beyerdynamic TYGR 300 R over-ear headphones. If you do not like to smile or enjoy having fun with your music, then do not buy the Final E500. One of my favourite reference tracks for testing headphones on is “Autumn Leaves” by Cannonball Adderley and Miles Davis. It’s a journey into sound like no other, IMHO. Miles Davis’s glorious horn never gets piercing and Sam Jones’s double-bass feels organic and alive on the E500. It feels to me like I was there with them in the recording studio. And what greater compliment to music can there be? Sony, Beyerdynamic, Blon, V-Moda, Edifier, Tin Hi-Fi, KZ, Koss and many other notable hi-fi brands have budget IEMs that vie for the title of budget IEM King. I admit that I have not heard many other IEMs, and therefore cannot give you an honest comparison with regards to other budget IEMs, but I find it hard to believe that any of them can beat the Final E500 for sheer bang-for-buck value. The end.

Great solid earphones, with nice sound.
These are the entry level to final's e-series, and very clearly a no-frills entry into the lineup. Compared to the pricier e2000c, the plastic housing and cabling are definitely more of a basic proposition. Having said that, the plastic housing doesn't feel 'cheap', it just doesn't have the luxury feel of the more expensive IEM's. The cable is two-strands-joined-together, rather than bound together into one fatter strand below the split, and I actually prefer this cable to the other one. It feels a little more rugged, and like it could stand up to a little more abuse. No extra frills in the packaging, which is no hardship. I can't imagine really needing yet another pleather pouch to put earbuds in, and very seldom get around to actually using the pouches in daily use anyway! I love the fit of Final's earbuds, and can sling them straight into my ears no problems. They come with the standard range of different sized tips, and I found I preferred to wear a slightly smaller one than usual, as I preferred the sound more when these were slightly more deeply inserted. I really like final's tips in general, as the brighter-colour insert on the right IEM gives more of a clue to which ear is which than the small embossed lettering on the housing. Isolation is pretty good, and precisely in line with what one might expect for this kind of rubber tip. When I first listened to these out of the box, I was worried that the sound might be a little harsh. They appeared slightly more high-frequency-heavy than I like, and I know I get fatigued by this over longer periods. Happily, as the drivers settled in a bit, the sound improved significantly. I'm not 100% convinced by all claims made about 'burn in', but these definitely benefited from a little time to bed-in before evaluating them. Sound-wise, these are well tuned as a pretty even frequency response. Not bass-monsters by any means, and if that's what you are really looking for in an earphone then these may not be for you, but bass is adequate in proportion without being overpowering. Midrange is well controlled by the 6.4mm dynamic driver, and vocals are nice and clear in the mix. High frequencies are pretty prominent, and these aren't shy and retiring. The extension and clarity aren't what you might get from a higher end IEM, but then these are less than the cost of a good steak dinner, and will 99% of the time be used in noisy environments where that subtlety is entirely wasted and surplus to requirements. These will form part of my rotation of 'throw it in the bag and forget it' IEM's, more than up to the challenge of daily use, and perfectly good enough in that situation, without being precious enough to worry about throwing them in a pocket full of keys/change. I wouldn't ever be disappointed with having to listen to my music through these on the go, and that is precisely what you might want from them.

I own both E4000 and E5000, both are great, but E5000 takes the edge here. The sound is full and rich, bass is excellent and perfectly controlled, mids and highs a bit tamed but still present in proper ratios. The only thing is that a really good source is required (Qudelix 5k in balanced mode manages to drive E5000 properly, single-ended connection max volume is not really great).

For the price, these have incredibly good soundstage and instrument separation, easily rivaling IEMs in the $200 range, and comparable or better than airpods pro in terms of overall sound quality. Bass: Low bass is controlled, while the mid-bass has a tight attack and decay, with a "punchy" feeling. I would not call these bass-head earphones. The mid-bass response is very alike my Campfire Andromedas, while the low-bass lacks slightly compared to them. Mids: These headphones struggle slightly in the mid range, where I often find lends to a slightly 'muddy' presentation. Vocals can get lost at times in genres like Metal or Hard Rock. Instruments with majority mid-range frequencies will have less clear separation than at the low or high ends. Highs: The highs are clear and non-silibant. While I would not describe them as "sparkly," they have good detail in high frequencies. In some ways, I would characterize the highs as better than my Campfire Cascaras ($400+). Female vocals sound very food. Comfort: These IEMs shine in their comfort. Easily one of the most secure (thanks to the type-E eartips) as well. You could sleep in these without ear pain, and they are secure enough to use in the gym or while running. The noise isolation is very good and I would wear these on a plane without issue. The cable has absolutely no memory, very comfortable, with zero microphonics. If you are familiar with Final Type-E eartips (which these are built around), these earphones emphasize all of the major qualities of those eartips: Good bass response, rolled-off highs, with a more intimate soundstage. For $40, you will be hard pressed to find an IEM that is as comfortable with comparable clear instrument separation.

My favourite earphones - not detail monsters for audiophiles, but musical, with soft approach and never tiring. Low and high frequencies are enough, not overly boosted. The sound is natural, not artificial - I don't need to listen details that distract from listening to the music. These are not earphones to analyze sounds - these are to listen properly your favourite songs. I like these more than Final E3000, because they do not provide more bass than it's needed. Tremendous value for money.
