I decided to pick up Spanish since I could use it in my job interactions. The second reason I bought the CDs was the fact I had a long drive to work and like to learn! I took Spanish 1 yearin High School and always wanted to beef-up my skills. The CDs are really well-made. I did think about Rosetta Stone, but they are more costly and these seemed to be a better learning tool for my use. The CDs have authentic Spanish speakers. They start with simple words, make the words into sentences and teach verb change through pure listening. You can identify what word to say with gender or with pronouns. The speakers have the listener repeat many, many times to learn which is very helpful. It is actually quite fun to learn and listen to in the car. I recommend this system because it is easy, yet very well made. You are able to go through each lesson, and repeat the tape if you feel you need to hone in the skills and words a bit better. Then, you can move on to the next lesson - it's great because it's all self-paced. You never have to go too fast and you are able to rewind the portion of CD speaking you might have not understood how to pronunciate or how to say. Great program!

Great program. I have taken Spanish in school, but that was mostly reading and writing. I never learned to speak and understand Spanish. The Pimsleur program focuses on these skills. It’s challenging but effective. I kind of thought I could do this while driving, but I found that to be a little dangerous, at least for me. It takes too much concentration. Anyway, I am on Unit 11 and feeling like I am on my way to finally be able to speak Spanish.

I purchased these recently and am about half way through the lessons and I think they are great. I find the Pimsleur approach works well for me and makes sense. The verbal practice is really effective and I feel it is teaching me to understand as well as speak. The vocabulary taught seems very relevant for travelers. I definitely would recommend this and plan to purchase the level II lessons.

This course is a great way to begin the Spanish journey and I enjoyed listening to the cd's in the car. Without a book it was easy to focus on the pronunciation and not get side tracked. After finishing level one my conversation skills are helped now I am also using Platiquemos since it includes books and I am ready for grammar as well. I used the Pimsleur approach to learn Italian before visiting Italy two years ago. It was very successful. While not fluent (that takes much more than 6 months!), I was able to rent a car, order food, check in and out of hotels, and even have a functional conversation with a B&B owner who spoke NO english. I was frequently complimented on my pronunciation. There is no better program to master the pronunciation. Recommendation: I found it helpful to write down words and phrases often. From a learning standpoint, this gives you the visual as well as the audio. Thanks Pimsleur. I am excited to learn Spanish, not just for my upcoming trip to Mexico, but for the purpose of making this my second language.

This audio program is wonderful. I have been using it as a supplement to taking noncredit courses at the local community college. Since I spend a great deal of time on the road the audio CD's turn a boring drive into a very productive one. The Pimsleur "psychology of learning" concept really works. I am retaining more than from just the class and find myself even thinking in Spanish now.

First of all, I did not understand that I was buying only half of the lessons. The reading part (which I consider essential) was missing. I wouldn't have bought i;t if I had known that. I also didn't know that I was receiveing a copy. Those are the reasons for the low grade I gave my purchase. I think the method is natural way to learn. I am learning quickly, much to my delight. However, I also find it boring. More than once i fell asleep before the end. I haven't yet decided to continue. One big factor is the cost. If it were more reasonable I think I would go on with it. My object is to learn as quickly as i can so my Spanish is usable and I believe Pimsleur can do that. I am coming to the end of this section and I must soon make that decision. Marion Clement

The instructors speak clearly and and at a regular speed and also leave enough space in between to say what they teach. They also repeat each new word or phrase a few times and build on what they teach in previous lessons as the lessons progress to new levels of learning.I recommend the Pimsleur approach above others I've given a listen to!

Love the Pimsleur learning method, in 1 hour I learned to say several phrases and remember them even after a month. will definitely buy other languages

An effective and likable first course in Spanish. I learned Spanish in high school 40 years ago, and this course was exactly the thing I needed to bring all that vague knowledge and forgotten vocabulary back into action. I am feeling much more confident in my skills now, much more ready for my upcoming 3 months in Spain. I have a half-hour commute each day, exactly the right amount of time to complete a Pimsleur lesson. I found that it was worth repeating the later lessons in the course 2 or 3 times before proceeding to the next one. If I have time, I will probably restart at lesson 20 or so once I have completed the entire course. One thing this course lacks (naturally enough) is written practice, and I found Duolingo (a free online course) a very good complement to the spoken practice with Pimsleur. The two together are actually more than the sum of their parts, and I'd recommend the combination to anyone serious about learning Spanish.
