Wow!!
I am a person that normally reads reviews before buying a product, and it was no different with this purchase. We have two Labradors, one that just turned 11 and the other is 1. I made this purchase to use more as a training aid for our 1 year old to break him of some unwanted habits that we weren't being successful with as part of our normal training. As most young labs are prone to do, he loves to put everything in his mouth outside, plus likes to take shoes, and remote controls. Reviews were mixed on this particular item with people saying it didn't work at all to others saying it worked great. In the end it seemed like a product that worked to some level and was very easy to use, so, decided it was worth a try for $30. The day we got it, which by the way came early by a day or two, I had the chance to use it. Our 1 year old had taken a shoe and would not release it. I gave him many repeated commands to leave it, but he wanted to play with it. I pushed the button for less than a second and WOW, it worked like a charm. I could not believe it, he dropped the shoe right away, and came by my side. In the few weeks we have had it, we have only had to use it a handful of times. It has worked every time on him. He now listens and responds to our commands much better. If he is starting to perform a behavior we don't want, and he won't respond to our verbal commands all we really need to do is show him the control and he obeys. It has been a great addition to our training. Having two dogs, we did have concern with using this to train our 1 year old and it accidentally also affecting our 11 year old that might be within range. It is a dilemma you will have to work out if you do have two dogs. However, for us it appears as it does not affect our 11 year old. We have used it a couple times when our 11 year old has been in range of our 1 year old, and it doesn't seem to phase him. So, I am not sure if it is his age and his hearing is not as good as it used to be and this frequency doesn't affect him, or, he is just a salty old man who has a tolerance to it. :-) Not sure, and we never have reason to use it on him, so, I don't know if holding the button longer would affect him. So, to the point other reviewers made this may not work on all dogs. Our neighbor has two dogs as well (Rottweiler and Rottweiler mix), and one is a barker when he is outside and sees someone. They have been frustrated, because they have not been able to correct him of it and have even used a training shock collar. That has worked, but not consistently. So, instead of being able to have the dog outside with them, they usually keep him in the house because of the barking. We were outside talking, and the dog started barking when they saw us, and I told them about this device and about the success we had with it on our 1 year old. He asked if he could try it, and he went over to their deck where their dog was barking pushed the button for less than a second and their dog stopped barking right away. I have no feedback on battery life. It takes 2 AAs, and we have used it so little I don't know how long they should or will last. The only negative thing I have noticed is it is easy to accidentally press the control button if you have it in your pocket or aren't paying attention to how you are carrying it. It doesn't take a lot to press it down, as the button is basically flush with the case. So, watch out for that. Overall we are happy with this purchase, and our results to this point have been great. It is doing what we hoped it would for helping us in our training.

Surprisingly effective and easy to use
I wasn’t sure what to expect with an ultrasonic bark deterrent, but this little device actually works better than I thought. I’ve been using it both indoors and outside when my dog gets into those nonstop barking moods, and it definitely helps calm things down quickly. What I like most is that it feels humane. There’s no shock or anything harsh, just a sound that grabs their attention. The different training modes are nice too because you can adjust depending on the situation. I usually stick with one of the middle settings and it has been enough. The range seems solid. I have used it across my yard without issues, and the rechargeable battery is a big plus so I am not constantly buying replacements. It is also compact and easy to carry around, which makes it convenient during walks or when visiting friends. Overall, if you are dealing with excessive barking and want a safe and simple solution, this is definitely worth trying. It is not magic overnight, but with consistency it really helps improve behavior.

PEACE reigns sublime.
Update#2: It's been about a week and I have not had to use this device again. Following the second use my dog now barks once and self-corrects (99% of the time). She barks, she self-corrects, she looks to me for approval - AND MAN DOES SHE GET APPROVAL. And so do the makers of this Modus Anti Barking Device, Ultrasonic Dog Bark Deterrent. They know what they're doing. UPDATE #1: I have upped my rating to 5 stars - this device simply works. I, as the operator of the device and the one with the agenda for using the device, need to know how/when/why to use it. The second time I used it with my dog, who was dealing with the UPS delivery person delivering a package to me (stuff for her, by the by) in the only way she really has available to her (barking), I made myself clear with the hush word ('hush', very clever of me, eh?), aimed the device at her (not necessary since she can hear it from anywhere but I needed her to know it was coming from me for a reason), said 'hush', pressed the button, she INSTANTLY silenced, came out of the window seat, looked at me without distress of any kind, went to the door to let me know there was something out there (yep, I got it buddy, I've got it), came to me for approval, laid down beside me for a little while and then went back to her window seat. Yep, this device works...and, I doubt I'll have to use it ever again to get her to hush, except possibly in extreme circumstances. I don't want her to stop barking, I rely on her watchfulness. I just needed her to stop barking on command under a specific circumstance (the big brown van) and this device helped me accomplish that after just 2 applications. INITIAL REVIEW: I don't know how I feel about this Modus Anti Barking Device, Ultrasonic Dog Bark Deterrent yet. It most definitely does what it says; it silenced my dog's barking mid bark. She's not a nuisance barker or an aggressive dog, she's simply indignant that the UPS delivery person or FedEx person or USPS or anyone carrying packages would have the audacity to come up her steps, or even in her condo complex parking lot. She is a good watch dog (a terrible guard dog though because the tail, it wags). She takes her job seriously. She barks for a reason and when I can get her attention she'll stop. If it's a neighbor, it's easier to get her attention. When it's a delivery person, I don't exist and she won't stop until the van is out of sight. Then, peace reigns again. So, stopping her expressing her indignation with the Big Brown Van usually means I have to walk over to the bay window, acknowledge what she's seen, confirm that it's okay for whoever to be there. I don't mind really but I work remotely and that's not something I can do during conference calls, especially since she's already been heard on the conference call and the damage is done. I used the Modus Anti Barking Device, Ultrasonic Dog Bark Deterrent and 2 in 1 Dog Training Aid for the first time today and one second press on the button and she instantly silenced. She came out of her window seat in the bay window, she looked around in CLEAR DISTRESS (tail tucked, ears back) trying to identify the source of the sound. She is still in distress 20 minutes later and she is clearly fearful of going back into her window seat. Not the result I was hoping for. She's not barking, it's true, but she's not in the window seat anymore or caring one bit about who's out there. Again, not the result I was aiming for. She LOVES her window seat and saying hello to the neighbors who love her. Instead, she's tucked tail, ears back, fearful of going into her window seat, and still trying to understand where the sound came from. I will try it a couple more times and try to make it clear the sound came from me and that it means I want her to stop barking. She's a rescue who has had more abuse than any living being deserves. She has known nothing but safety and love and happiness with me (she's my nutty companion) and I am disinclined to do anything that causes her any amount of distress. She's not barking but she's not happy. I'll post an update after maybe two more tries.

Modus Ultrasonic Bark Controller is affordable, easy to use and works great!
The Modus Ultrasonic Bark Controller works wonderfully! We have a six year old excitable English Springer Spaniel. She has some behavior issues. Barking for one and oddly, compulsivly licking our cement patio. We dreamed of a quiet peaceful home and relaxing evenings sitting on the patio sipping a glass of wine with our canine companion laying peacefully at our feet. Instead we had a home filled with barks, yelps, and the sound of running paws slipping on the hardwood floors and echoing throughout the house every time the mailman came, an Amazon delivery arrived or any living being, be it human or animal, was outside for any reason. You can imagine what she was like when the doorbell rang or friends came over. Relaxing outside was out of the question unless we kept our dog inside or on a leash. Our vet ruled out any dietary deficiencies that would lead her to lick the patio. We took her to an animal behaviorist who said it was frustrated hunting behavior and there was nothing we can do about it except keep her inside. We purchased the Modus bark controller with our fingers crossed hoping, perhaps it would help a little. We thought the price was well worth taking a chance it would work. After all, we could have purchased 10 or them for the cost of the behaviorist we took her too. We didn't have to wait long to use it. The first time we hit the button and the green light came on showing us that it worked , she stopped barking and running IMMEDIATELY! She cocked her head and looked around wondering where this sound, that we couldn't hear, was coming from. She didn't seem to be anxious or frightened of the sound, just distracted. We chose to say the command "settle" when she barked. When she quieted we followed up with lavish praise and affection. In a few days we noticed that if we didn't have the controller handy when she barked the command alone quieted her down. Outside we found the same positive effect on the cement licking behavior. We highly recommend the Modus Ultrasonic Bark Controller. It is affordable and used with consistant training and followed with reward is very effective

Barking Stopped as Soon as I Pushed the Button
Our pup is not typically a barker. However, in particular situations, she will bark and bark and not shut up. The most annoying of those situations is when guests come to visit us in our home. The may have known the guests for years and may have seen them several times within the last couple of weeks. However, each time they show up at our door, the barking begins and would go on for several minutes. Ha ha, its like she wants to tell them everything that has happened to her since she last saw our guests. During a typical visit (accompanied by the typical barking) from one of our friends, the friend pulled from her purse, a Modus and suggested we try it (she uses it at home for her dog). Upon pushing the button, the barking stopped immediately, and our pup simply tilted her head to one side and looked toward the Modus. It was as if this strange new sound had suddenly grabbed her attention and was holding her curiosity. Upon witnessing this, we immediately purchased our own Modus from Amazon. Since receiving the Modus and using it, barking during guest visits has subsided. A short press of the Modus button was all that it took to immediately stop the barking. Now, our pup no longer even attempts to bark when guest come to visit. It only took her about three times to realize that her barking was unacceptable. You don't even have to be near your dog. Just simply be within the same room and they will "hear" the Modus. Obviously, it does not cause any sort of pain or trauma. In fact, our pup seems more curious about the sound and we usually come over to use when the button is pressed, looking at us like "Hey, what is that noise?" Again, the Modus seems to be most effective within the size of a room. Don't expect it to quiet the neighbor's dogs (we already tried that.....ugh). It just does not have that much power and reach. However, for indoor training or close by training outside, it works great.

The rechargeable one doesn’t work with my dog
I have the original gold one that runs on batteries, and it’s the only thing that works for my dog. It’s been giving me issues, so I wanted to order another to have on hand. I saw this one that had a few extra settings and was rechargeable, so I thought, great! Not one of the settings even gets my dog’s attention 😔

The new version is not user friendly
Ive purchased this item 2 times. Originally my first purchase I had great experience and success with the item. The second time I purchased the item changed and I had zero success. The 1st I didn't have to plug in to charge, my dog was easily trainable with the 1st one. The second one I had to plug in and charge and the light would be green when fully charged but the second you unplugged it wouldn't operate or display any light and my dog had zero response to it. My mistake was lending the original to my boss and not able to get it back so I was forced to buy again. The original worked great but when manufacturers update things or upgrade you never receive the same as the 1st product. The only reason I bought again was because it was wonderful. Unfortunately not the newest version 😕

It actually works...BUT... dogs apparently are quite individual when responding.
We have two mid-sized, but strong, and loud Woodles. They are taken out on reasonably long walks at least once per day where they will encounter other dogs and people. Our presenting problem was many times one or both would lunge and bark out of control depending on dogs and/or people. They seemed to sense who needed some antics and loud barking. With one of our Woodles he was instantly "handled" with our Modus ultrasonic hand controller. Worked instantly. And continues to do so. Our other Woodle initially responded similarly, but after a few days she seemed to pay much less attention. Until... we brought the unit closer to her head. Seemed that helped considerably (...we assumed the training sound emitted grew much louder as the unit drew closer to the ears). So that's how we use it. In fact with two dogs this approach works quite well since our male Woodle seems to know that the emitted sound aimed closer to female Woodle's noggin is not for him and pays little attention. The sounds emitted don't seem to do cause any real discomfort or harm...they just divert attention, which is what you want...no harm, but interruption of bad behavior. All in all we are quite satisfied with the Modus ultrasonic in helping us with training and extinguishing these bad behaviors. So far so good. I do think that the "value" for price paid is only slightly above average but if it works for you it will be found to be well worth it. Luckily Amazon allows a 30 day window to return if your experience doesn't feel worth it to YOU based on your dog's response. Definitely worth taking a try though, and for us we are keeping it!

Useless
Don’t buy it. It is only a battery powered dog whistle and my dogs ignored it completely. I have passed it to a charity

Great to have AND it works !!!
Brilliant ! I was sceptical .. but I really can recommend ... I have a mini schnauzer who is so excited to see other dogs she launches herself at them barking and they and their owners run away .. now I beep her .. she calms down and greets them with just a few mutterings .. it’s great as I can have in my handbag and do it without anyone seeing ..Or I just show it to her and she stops .. it doesn’t seem to hurt her just gives her a surprise and stops her from barking .. I really would recommend as it works well for her ...

Best 30$ I ever spent!
It works. As simple as that. At first she’d need me to beep it a few times before she stopped. But after a few days, just her seeing me reach out for it was enough to stop her from barking. A little tip: Don’t try it once and decide it doesn’t work. Stick with it. Within a few days of using it, the barking diminishes. Eventually, she ended up looking at people walk past the house with their dogs and would remain calm. At the very worst, she sometimes does a really soft, barely audible growl and all I need to do is say “shhhh..” and I talk to her calmly and she stops. It’s been hiding in a drawer for a very long time now, because she’s trained and no longer needs it. 😊
