will my 17.3 laptop fit?

I have bought this for travelling and was worried that my large MSI gaming laptop measuring 49.5cm external corner to corner would not fit. But it fits comfortably. Any larger than 50cm diagonally would start to be a squeeze, I think. Have a look at the photo of the laptop in the backpack in my review.

If the dimensions are to be believed. it works out at 44.43litres (47.24x34.29x27.43) / 1000 = 44.43 BUT. given all the pockets and shape etc, at a guess, actual could be anything from 35L

Is the laptop section padded to protect it from being dropped?

Yes. On both sides. Plus lid and bottom of bag are also padded.
