Great for Urinary Issues [UPDATE]
[UPDATE] It has been nearly one year since my first review and I'm happy to report that my cat has not experienced ANY veterinarian problems. No bladder issues, healthy coat, and looking great! I can't recommend this product enough! Also, you think he would get sick of eating the same food for a year straight... NOT TRUE! He makes sure I know every night when it's can time! [ORIGINAL REVIEW] Two months ago (December 2013) my cat had to be brought into an emergency clinic. They proclaimed that he had a blocked bladder and required immediate medical attention, placing a catheter in him and giving him an IV. He stayed overnight and was so bad that they suggested he should stay even longer. I was told he had crystals in his urine and everything needed to be flushed out. Due to financial constraints, I took him home after one overnight stay. The medical bills were outrageous and I am just a college student. There was no way I could afford to keep him there any longer. I was told that there was a high likelihood of of him reblocking in the next few days. I did a lot of research on the internet and decided to purchase Purine One Urinary Tract dry food AND this Purine Urinary Tract canned food. I found that it is very important to include more liquids in his diet. Therefore, I started my own regimen. I feed him the dry food in the morning and afternoon and in the evening I give him one can. He is a big cat, 14 pounds, so I generally feed him quite a bit of dry food (you can find it on Amazon or even in Walmart). I make sure he has plenty of water in his bowl throughout the day. I even add ice cubes to entice him to drink more. It's so important to get those fluids in!! The first week he came home from the vet I was paranoid. I placed water bowls all over the house and put a little chicken broth in the water so he would drink it. I immediately stopped feeding him his old food (Purina Naturals) and started him on this. I feel his bladder to make sure it never feels firm like a peach (sign of obstruction). He hasn't had a single issue! I am so happy to say that this food seems to be doing wonders for him. His chances of making it through this were rough and we beat the odds. However, I would definitely suggest feeding the canned food everyday. If you can, try to feed two cans a day because that liquid is just so important. Unfortunately, I don't have it in my budget to give him two cans a day so I stick to one. Overall, great product!

So far so good!
We have a 6 year old male American Shorthair cat, named Boogie, who is MAJOE part of our family. In our household it's only my hubby and I and our cats. I am only 28 years old, however I'm disabled due to a very rare connective tissue disease. So Boogie (and our new little kitten) is my own source of company while my husband is at work. Since I am pretty much bed bound and never leave my home, you can imagine how much this kitty means to me....so when a couple months ago we almost lost him due to a severe infection caused by a urinary blockage, we were terrified and wanted to do everything we could to ensure this doesn't happen again. At first the vet said he'd have to be on prescription cat food for the rest of his life that will help with the pH balance of his urine. (They had him on Hill's Prescription Diet C/D) However with my medical bills we just could not afford the ridiculous prices, not to mention the fact that they want you to buy the food from the vet which requires driving 30 minutes there and 30 minutes back every time we ran out....simply put it just wasn't reasonable and we felt there had to be something just as good out there. So we've kept our cats (Boogie and the kitten) both on the C/D dry food, but rather than giving them the C/D wet food as well, we've gone with Purina Pro Plan Urinary Tract Health Formula instead. Boogie prefers wet food over dry but he HATED the expensive C/D wet food, now however since we switched he LOVES the Chicken Entree flavor and eats his fill in the morning and will snack on the dry food in the evening or at night. So far so good, we've been doing this for about a month and a half and there's no signs of bladder issues. Thanks Purina for giving our fur baby a safe and reasonably price alternative that he actually enjoys eating, yet will keep him healthy. This cat's gotten me through many a hard night when I was in pain and many lonely days being stuck in a bed alone. He truly deserves the best, and I feel Purina is it.

For those searching for food for those 'Blocked Toms'
I recently had a kitty with a blocked tom issue (couldn't pee) and I share your pain! He had to be on C/D from the vets after his 2k procedure and finances were a little tight. While I do appreciate C/D, regardless of the disagreements among many cat care groups, it helped him get on the straight path back to recovery. Now we're at a point where he eats with his brothers and sisters and while they were on his diet for a couple of weeks, I'm making a move to ProPlan for urinary care. Along with a little bit of dry food on the side to help keep strong teeth. So far, so good. He hasn't had high bacteria in his bladder or a crystal relapse since getting on this. (Do note that I add a few table spoons of water to make sure the boys are all getting enough of that.) Pros: All the cats seem to like it- 8 of them and that's hard to do. Has a good amount of water/gravy at the start but I still add a little more water. Have tried both giblets and pate, both are good! Not too much 'junk' in it. Price is very nice. Even my girl with a sensitive stomach manages this pretty well if I put some of her dry kibble on top, she eats straight through the to the water/meat. Cons: Tiny cans make me cry but a little seems to go a long way. I haven't had much time to research outside of 'is this ok to feed to a cat who had blockage problems' but, for the most part, it seems good! I have moved from dry feeding to predominately wet food (worth the research if you're not sure what to do like I was!) Edit: For those of you searching for the other flavors of the UTH food, chewy.com usually has them for about the same price! I just checked the price of the ocean fish here and yowch!

I recently switched my cats to Purina Pro Plan Urinary Tract Health, Chicken formula, and I’m so glad I did. Both boys love the taste and I feel confident knowing it’s supporting their bladder health after losing my other cat to urinary issues. The formula doesn’t come in a big variety of flavors (we stick to chicken because fish isn’t the best for urinary health), but honestly, they don’t mind — they clean their bowls every time. Their coats are shiny, their energy is good, and I’ve noticed they seem more satisfied and content after meals. Yes, it’s more expensive than standard foods, but if you’ve ever faced an emergency vet bill, you know the cost of prevention is far less than the heartbreak and expense of treatment. For me, the peace of mind makes it absolutely worth it. Highly recommend this food to anyone with cats prone to urinary issues.

my cat love it. I bought it as a substitute when I ran out of Iam's. Too many calories and way too fat. But if that's what you're into, it is a good cat food

My cat really likes this food. I started feeding him this purina and he has more energy and his furr is so much softer! He seems to be more healthier and hasn't had any issues so far after I started feeding him this food as he was prone to UTI'S.

Great cat food, my cat loves it and it's been doing wonders for his urinary problems. Would love to give it 5 stars if it wasn't for a major health risk with this product... They are really poorly packaged and regularly come with small to large dents in 20%+ of the cans. Mostly its been fine, just superficial dents but today I received a package that smelled like the rotting corpses of a hundred animals and when I opened it one of the cans of cat food had been ruptured and had been sitting open and decomposing for what appears to be several weeks as the contents had already reduced to a black mass of sludge. Inspect your cans thoroughly before feeding them to your cat! This is a HUGE safety hazard, and the improper handling by amazon could be putting you cats life at risk! Had this been a smaller puncture, or I received the package a few weeks earlier I may not have noticed the smell and found the tainted can and could it could have done serious harm to my cat. From now on I'll be putting all my purina cans under water to check for airbubbles that would indicate a compromised can. Amazon did end up refunding the defective product, but offered no explanation, apologies, or assurances that they would look into this issue.

Be aware, the feeding guide recommends 1oz per pound of body weight, if feeding only wet, and if your cat has urinary problems that's probably why you're buying this; that is approximately 4-5 cans per day for a larger cat, roughly $12/day or $360 a month on cat food. The avg price for the 5.5oz cans is roughly $1.99, these are 3oz cans.
