What's the pole made of? Steel, plastic, etc?

Robert, this pole is made basically from aluminum.. Four sections that expand out to a good length. The hand grip is a compressed rubber that feels good and is very strong. The only plastic is basically the top connector for the camera. The wifi remote fits into the handle and that is a great feature. All in all I really like the pole. Be sure to wash it in fresh water after use in salt water...

Is it water proof? Can it be used in salt water?

Yes the pole is water proof. I wouldn't recommend using in water though as it will quickly sink. As with any GoPro accessories rinse and wipe after use in salt water and everything should be fine.

Does it float in water?

It does not float in the water BUT GoPro does make a back for your GoPro that does float which works great!

Does it come with the actual remote, or does the pole just have a placeholder, and I'll still need to buy the remote separately?

Does not come with remote. You have to buy the remote separately.
