These are the peelers you should get
These are the best kind of peelers. They are sharp, easy to use, and well designed. It's best to wash by hand and dry right away so the metal doesn't rust.

Prep Kitchen Essential: An Industry Standard
For those who work in the food industry, this one is an essential. Common complaints: Blade rusts, awkward to use, feels cheap. Response: 1.) The blade rusts because the peeler is not made of stainless steel. As someone else has already pointed out, it's carbon steel which requires more care (rinse/wash & wipe try with a kitchen towel right away) to prevent rusting. However, this makes the Kuhn Rikon peelers MUCH sharper. They also keep their edge longer than your normal metal swivel head peeler that most people are used to seeing. 2.) For new users, the kuhn rikon peeler can feel quite awkward because its Y-shape means that it is best for certain things. In the restaurant business, peeling 10gallons of potatoes for mash happens every couple days and this is the peeler to do it. The Y-peeler is best for certain tasks and requires a certain grip and technique. It takes some getting used to but once you've got it down, you'll be going through apples and potatoes like no one's business. 3.) These peelers aren't meant to be kept for years unless of course you only peel a few veggies a year. For the product intended use, these are plenty sturdy, can be thrown around, used, abused and still stay sharper for longer. Many prep cooks go through one of these every couple months just because of the sheer volume of food they prepare. So, with professional wear and tear, you're not going to keep them around forever. The reason why cooking professionals are generally so satisfied with these is that the Kuhn Rikons are the best peelers when considering working efficiency, durability and price. Summary: If you're a home cook who only peels an apple as a snack and a few potatoes for dinner every few days, you might not want to bother with getting used to a different kind of peeler and the slightly higher maintenance. BUT if you're in the food industry, you know that you can't find what the Kuhn Rikon peelers have to offer anywhere else.

My favorite peeler ever!
I saw these on America's Test Kitchen, a great cooking show that tests out kitchen tools among other things. The shocker is that they are so low-cost, and my favorite peeler. I just used one on a fragile-skinned cucumber, and it was like a hot knife through butter! So easy, very little effort to peel very well. Little cucumber got caught in the device, only the peel! The material cleaned well in the dishwasher. I love the way it fit in the palm of my hand, perfect size! The material is durable, yet light and user friendly. I'm buying them for my adult children!

Good Peelers But With a Caveat
I like these a lot, but find myself replacing them every couple of years, because the blades seem to get rusty. I haven't put them in the dishwasher at all with my last purchase, and they still show signs of rust-like appearance on the blades. That said, they're cheap enough to replace them and not lose any sleep over it. But I do recommend, if possible, just rinsing them off rather than washing them and DEFINITELY not putting them in the dishwasher. I was looking for some "higher quality" Y-shaped peelers, but there doesn't seem to be anything that would make a difference.

The best ever, and mine DON'T rust.
I waited for several months before posting a review, since I had read that these peelers have a bad rusting problem. Not that I can see. These are the BEST, ABSOLUTELY BEST peelers that I've ever used, and I'm 70. I was very skeptical at first, particularly given the low cost and seemingly "cheap" design (plastic). I will admit that the first time I used one I wasn't thrilled, but that turned out to be because I was putting as much pressure on it as I had on my former peeler. Once I learned to "lighten up" these peelers have sped through every peeling job I've given them, including peaches. I can't recommend them highly enough, particularly if you're like me and have arthritis in your hands and wrists. I heard about them first in "The Food Lab" by J. Kenji Lopez Alt and, since I found his book such a treasure, I decided to try them. Kenji was right. Regarding the "rust problem" — As I said, I've been using these peelers for months with NO sign of rust. I don't wash them in the dishwasher. (Why would you?) Since fruits and vegetables aren't laden with fat the wash-up is extremely simple. When I'm done peeling I give them a quick rinse under hot water, and dry immediately. They remain as rust-free and sharp (almost dangerously so) as they were the day they arrived. I cannot recommend them highly enough. ADDED on 4/20/18: I've now had these peelers for a little over 2 years. After a while, using them almost daily, I decided to try putting one of them in the dishwasher. I figured that they were cheap enough that even if one was destroyed I could get another. There were NO problems at all with washing these in the dishwasher. I put them in the silverware basket, which is in the bottom rack, and there is no difference that I can discern. All 3 of them are still as sharp as the day I bought them, and without any sign of rust. I'm 72 and I'll probably be able to will these to someone! You simply cannot go wrong with these peelers. UPDATE 7/27/20 I've now had the peelers for 4 years, and regularly wash them in the dishwasher. They're just as sharp as the day I got them. They'll peel anything — including butternut squash. BEST. PEELERS. EVER!

It's a perfectly good and usable peeler. The blade is made of carbon steel and needs a bit more maintenance than stainless steel. Particularly, carbon steel can oxidize (rust) if left in water, and acidic compounds such as citrus juices or tomato sauces can speed up oxidation. However, carbon steel is harder than stainless steel and can stay sharp and functional longer than stainless steel. TL;DR — Maintain this peeler by giving it a good rinse and wipe clean after each use, storing it in a drawer, and it can stay sharp for a long time.

I honestly think these are the best peelers in the world. I have tried the fancy heavy ones with big rubber grips, but I always come back to this. It is incredibly light and comfortable to hold, even when peeling a big bag of potatoes. The blade is razor sharp and just glides through everything without getting stuck. It is a simple design, but it works perfectly.

About to order these for the third time. They’ve lasted 4-7 years on previous experience. I just noticed my last remaining is rusty (but still peeling well). If I am cooking at friends/family this is something I always take with me. Care needed - they are sharp.
