Good, but not 4 times good.
Update March 2018: I last bought Rain Drops in September 2017, and paid a little over $10 for 2 boxes. Now the price has gone up to over $40 for 2 boxes. This stuff is good, but it's not that good. For that price, I could just buy new clothes and skip the laundry! Seriously, it is time to buy a whole house water filter/softener. Renting? Look at softeners made for campers - they are portable.I have fairly hard well water and like to get my laundry clean. I had been using Calgon powdered water softener and had been buying it at K-Mart, paying about $6.00 per box. The K-Mart closed and I went on Amazon hoping to find it there. Amazon does carry Calgon powder, but at about $12.00 per box. I also found Rain Drops, which I hadn't seen since I was a kid and it was much cheaper, closer to $4.00 per box. So I order a two-pack and it arrived on time, wrapped in plastic because one of the boxes had spilled a bit. Not a major problem. then I used Rain Drops in the laundry and I am sooooo glad that K-Mart went out of business and sooooo glad that Amazon was charging so much for Calgon because I am getting soooooo much better results with Rain Drops. Rain Drops does not just soften the water, it also gets the clothes cleaner. Also, I had often noticed an odor that lingered in the clothing after washing, which I think comes from the well water, but that odor is gone since I started using Rain Drops. I even washed the whites with just detergent and Rain Drops (no bleach) and they came out clean and smelling good. So, I highly, highly recommend Rain Drops in the laundry if you have hard or otherwise problem water.

Used for a different reason
We had a build up of poop scum on our camping toilet tank. We soaked it with warm water and this product and it assisted in softening and removing that poop scum. Probably not what you were thinking....

Price is outrageous from 18 months ago.
I use this in our black water tank on the RV. Works great. I went to repurchase and WOW! it went from 10 dollars for 2 42 oz boxes to over 40.00 for 2. Why? Absolutely crazy price increase.

Great product for the laundry and more!
I was really surprised when I first started using this product at just how clean my laundry looked when I was folding it.I use it in the wash cycle, and while the directions call for 1/2 cup in the wash, I actually use about half that much and it works fine.Again, the proof is in the pudding, and I'm really impressed at just how much better my laundry looks as a result of me using this product.6/30/2014I still love this product! I use it when I wash my dishes and I use 1/2 c. in the bath soak.My dishes sparkle when I wash with this added to my dish water. And I love how the water softening when I add some to my bath. It also means I use less of the mineral salts I soak in as well.I'm finding whenever I use this product, I use less of the everyday products (laundry detergent, dish detergent, mineral salts) when I use this. And always the end result is so much better than not using Rain Drops.

YIPPEE! Rain Drops Water Softener is Excellent and I'll never go back to my old product! :)
Whoo Hooooo! Finally a replacement for Calgon Water Softener! Rain Drops Water Softener is a fraction of the price and it works PERFECTLY! I have a super sensitive sense of smell and taste (both a blessing and a curse) and this has less of a scent than the Calgon. Frankly, I enjoy having the scent of detergents and fabric softener because it tells me my laundry is clean and fresh, but this Rain Drops has no scent at all :( No problem however, because I use Tide detergent and Downey fabric softener so it's okay.Seriously, I can't begin to imagine why the seller of Calgon here on Amazon is charging more than $20 per box when the Rain Drops is the same for less than a quarter the price including shipping and the product is FANTASTIC.bottom line: THIS STUFF IS AWESOME AND I'M GOING TO USE THE SUBSCRIPTION SERVICE FOR EVEN GREATER SAVINGS.

Hard water? Clothes feel STICKY after a wash? Whites dingy? Colors faded? Here's what ive learned...
So we have extremely hard water. I got this to use for cloth diapers, and if anyone knows about cloth diapering, you know a TON of research has to go into the proper washing and rinsing of them otherwise MAJOR CHEMICAL BURNS will occur to baby's skin with the left over detergent and bacteria still in the diaper due to improper rinsing.SO, here is what I have learned: if you wash in hard water, part of your detergent goes to softening the water, and what's left to clean the clothes, what happens during the rinse cycle is the new hard water used to rinse will never be able to remove the detergent/bacteria/dirt from the clothes and in fact, the hard water mineral deposits stick to the detergent/bacteria floating around in the rinse water and the whole mess will bind to the fibers in your clothes. This build up just keeps piling on over time and that's why your clothes will be dingy or faded. Here is what i do, keep in mind the PROCESS will he the SAME for everyone, but the AMOUNTS of detergent, water softener, and even number of rinse cycles will VARY due to many factors ( hardness of water, type of detergent, type of machine, load size, water amount) i have an HE washer, I wash my clothes with a little more than recommended detergent and my loads are medium leaving space for clothes to love around. Once wash is complete, i open the door, sprinkle 1/2c Rain Drops powder in, then run another RINSE ONLY cycle. Very important that the final water touching your clothes is not hard water because the detergent and bacteria along with the hard water minerals will just bind to and remain on those fibers. Hope this helps someone.Ps , due to years of detergent and hard water build up in your clothes, you may have to run several rinse only cycles with rain drops to remove that gunk. Even your washer will still have that detergent hard water build up too.
