Even a cheap disposable mechanical pencil is better than a wooden pencil because 1
Even a cheap disposable mechanical pencil is better than a wooden pencil because 1. You don't have to stop writing or drawing to sharpen it. When the lead gets short, just click for more. and 2. It keeps a good point at all times, giving consistent line quality, rather than starting fine and crisp and gradually becoming dull and smudgy. If you've tried disposable mechanicals and been satisfied, you don't know what you're missing until you try a draftsman's mechanical pencil. Everything good about mechanical pencils has been refined to a level you must experience to understand and believe. Generations of drafstmen and engineers who used these pencils all day, every day insisted on this level of reliability and performance. But with so many pencils available, and prices from the ridiculously cheap to the ridiculously expensive, how do you choose? After reading reviews of drafting pencils, I bought several top-rated pencils to compare. All wrote and drew very well, but each had a different feel. Some were fat or thin, heavy or light. Some had hard or soft textured grips, while others were smooth. I realize feel is a matter of personal taste, and if you like a thicker pencil, I recommend the Staedtler 925 25. But after trying various pencils and coming back to the Pentel Sharp P205, its feel disappeared. My hand moved smoothly and comfortably across the page as if the pencil had vanished, and thoughts flowed directly from my mind to the paper, coming out as perfectly balanced lines, as expressive and precise as I imagined.

Nearly Perfect Mechanical Pencil
I really like the balance and weight of this mechanical pencil, which is so important when you’re drawing so your hand and arms don’t fatigue easily. It’s not a complex product, but it works well and is well worth the price. I intend to buy 10 more so I never run out.

Learned to love these little beasts decades ago and have passed that love on to my son. I didn't allow him to have one until 6th grade (attractive to too many other kids) but I saw him covet mine more than the key to the front door. I seldom loan them to anyone because I'm afraid something might happen and it would go astray (permanently) so on the rare occasion that I do I find myself hyper alert and visually track it until I get it back. I have (though rarely) misplaced one or two at my job over the years and posted email APB's along with a bag of M &M (economy size) as a bounty, and giving a complete description which included the partially crushed/tooth marks) piece of plastic the eraser used to fit in.............. the silver cap long gone. I used to tape a piece of paper with name on it around them. I dropped my "exclusive" crossing to the other side of the tracks at the train station when it fell out of my bag and went back for it. That was the one in competition for the record. I placed a bet on how long my son and I could keep a singular/exclusive one in use and clocked up 11 years but failed my son's record of 14. Although this would seem that I've seldom bought them it's not the case. I keep them around the house (keep my senior one in my purse) because sometimes they disappear into pieces of furniture. On only two occasions have I had to retire them 1. the lead wouldn't eject, 2. dropped on point. They are strong, comfortable between fingers, long lasting leads, allows for small writing (mine is clumsy and large) and have delightfully chewable caps. I use them to to take notes, write letters and cards in fact the only time I don't use them is when a signature is required. When I die my "exclusive" pencil will be mounted on a small block and willed to my son, and my headstone will read RIP,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,REST IN PENTELS after all, unlike a pen, nothing is permanent.

I have been using this model of mechanical pencil since the 70's. I have drawn everything from houses to sewage treatment plants with it and would be lost without it. In fact this is why I bought this package...I thought that I lost my original. As luck would have it, I found the original right after these arrived....always the way. Now I have two (2) spares...good for another 50 years!. Me...not so much.
