Collins French Visual Dictionary (Collins Visual Dictionaries)

The book cost was just right. I love that it has an accompanying audio with the text because it allows you to simulate learning in the classroom. You learn the words by reading them and hearing them. I usually just read through the French words and their English equivalent. It’s like having flashcards. The fact that they have pictures helps more with the learning and makes it not boring and to life. It is on nicely made paper and print. I am looking to getting more books to learn my French on my own from the company. The size is compact.

My feelings are mixed about this little visual dictionary but after using it for a bit, I think 4 stars is fair. I love: -- the very clear and clean visuals -- the white background that makes it pleasant to look at -- the words in French use gender -- the sentences that you will most likely use with the vocabulary on that page -- some cultural notes ("métro" = from the name of the company that was first set up to operate the Paris network, "la Compagnie du chemin de fer métropolitain de Paris") -- the numerous and varied themes (leisure, health, reptiles, birds , flowers...). I am actually learning a lot of new words, even though I am bilingual! -- there is an online audio to help with the pronunciation What bothers me: -- there were no pics of the book on Amazon when I bought it. I saw that the cover was nice so I bought it based on that. HOWEVER, -- it is very small and very thin, as you can see in the pictures -- there is no indication of the total number of words like other visual dictionaries do -- some themes do not have pictures but only text. See for expl. the picture I uploaded of the jobs. It's a shame because the jobs are super easy to represent! Overall it is a good product and I recommend it. As a native of French and as a French professor, I believe it can be very useful for visual learners and people who need something small enough to carry in their pocket/bag. I was a bit underwhelmed when I saw how small it is so I just wanted to warn people.

Worked for my college class

Really beneficial book. Lots of clear and vivid illustrations with phrases that could be used with each one of them. Overall a good one.

This is an excellent source to learn some new vocabulary! It includes mostly nouns with their associated pictures, but also common phrases and things to look out for as a new french speaker. The only downside I didn’t realize (which is my bad) is that the english is british english which has a few references I’ve had to look up. It’s also missing some words I think would be valuable, but it is intended for overview and they certainly achieve that here!

I wouldn't have bought this if I had known it was going to be so tiny. The print is really small, and this is really a pocket-sized dictionary - literally something one could carry around in a pocket or purse. I wanted something more comprehensive, larger,.and definitely with larger print. However the person I bought it for seems to enjoy it in spite of these drawbacks.

This is a pocket sized book. Maybe useful if you’re searching for a word when out on the street in Paris. Wouldn’t recommend for study or reference.
