More an identification guide than a design manual
I bought the "Fastener Black Book" after a very good experiencewith the "Engineer’s Black Book". Many of the good physical features such as the binding and paper that are carried across however the content was disappointing. The book is build more around identification of fasteners than the use of them which means it cannot be used as a design reference. Having shear strength is more helpful for pins than dimensional tolerances; it is part of the standard and what you normally review. Where applicable having DIN values with ISO is more helpful. Having equivalents on a separate page means you need to flick between pages (I have annotated them on my copy). The ISO are always quoted in the 'DIN' section when applicable. Several error found in publication Page 103 Mass units gm, kg/m³ Page 119 Box should be merged "Tensile strength/ in Mpa", 898-7 20898-7 No listings of rivet bolts or Hi-Lok Pins (although could argue a lot on want should not should not be in such a list) P164 ISO 8735 image should have thread P164 ISO 8736 are taper pins. 1:50 P165 ISO 8739 lgth→length not wrong just odd why it was shortened in this one instance. P228 Pipe threads - only mentioned on this page. I can understand why they are left out as they are not fasteners but odd the inclusion here. P238 Shank Definition conflicts with other definitions in the book. Shank full thread, Grip Full thread. P239 T nut! The type used with extrusion would be more expected!

Exhaustive, very informative (non-engineer reviewer). I keep it in the workshop and refer to it regularly. Also the included thread pitch ruler thing was great.

This book has sensible torque values and a lot of other good data, detailed and thorough. Especially regarding 18-8 stainless steel which is very often given with values that are way too high. Even Harley Davidson ran into this mess of misreported torque values which have been narrowed down to incorrect material properties. 304/18-8 stainless steel in bar or wire form is a very ductile/gummy material for use as a fastener which is supplied in the annealed state, having a yield strength below even Aluminum 6061-T6. Great engineering, machine shop or garage reference book, including materials details & parameters, coatings allowances, etc. Not a cheap purchase, but very well done and worth the investment. The pages are wax? coated so they will stand up to much more than what Machinery's Handbook ever would. Highly recommended. My company should buy a book for every engineer and machinist. Most engineers these days will use Google or some other junk resource and end up breaking screws and bolts on a regular basis.
