Perfect fit, problem solved
Our mixer was making a clicking noise and then in the middle of a batch of cookies.... just stopped mixing. The motor was running but the beater wasn't turning. Like so many others, I just assumed the gear had broken and it was an easy fix. I ordered the entire assembly rather than a cheap knock-off figuring if the original lasted 20 years a real replacement should last that long as well. Turns out it wasn't the gear, it was the pin that holds the gear onto the shaft. You can see it's missing from the original part. Because I had this entire replacement unit ready to go it didn't matter that it wasn't the gear. Had I just ordered the gear I would still be without a working mixer. This one fit exactly like the original and the mixer is once again mixing and runs a lot quieter. Appears to be the same quality as the one I took out. Time will tell.

Easier to install than the worm gear inside it, costs about the same, genuine factory part
Perfect fit for my Artisan mixer. Comes dry, you will have to grease it yourself. Easy to drift out the pin when it's clean and new and not already mounted in the mixer. Grease both sides of the washers, pack the gear teeth with grease, grease the shafts and their holes. Put it back together using a finishing nail to line things up at the pin hole, then gently tap the drift pin in until centered. Mount it to the mixer, then coat it with lots more grease. I learned the hard way that you're better off with a factory part and not a knock off, and you absolutely want the proper kind of black grease not the white food grade grease ever.

Good fit; well made. Repaired and extended the life of a 1988, classic KSM-5 Proline
I have an older (~1988) KitchenAid KSM-5 Proline bowl lift model, one of the last of the ones with the Hobart engineering (has the motor brush screws on the side of the mixer head). My unit began to whine and overheat, particularly when I used higher speeds, when mixing a large batch (~1,000g) of bread dough -- perhaps the toughest job one of these mixers is subject to in home use. My dilemma was to repair or replace. After a review of more recent models, I found that an equivalent replacement to my old workhorse, relatively bullet proof KSM-5 model was a KitchenAid KSM-7 Proline, which costs ~$600, but is not as readily repairable. (In the KSM-7, if the motor or drive train gives problems, the whole motor assembly must be replaced, unlike in my KSM-5, individual gears and components can be readily removed and replaced.) Since the one, which I had seemed to be overall of better build and service quality, and is much quieter in operation than KitchenAid 5 qt models commonly available in membership and big box stores, I decided that repair, if possible, was the best course. Though the motor and other features have changed a lot after Hobart sold the KitchenAid line in the early 1900s, this part fit mine perfectly and restored it to almost as good as new operation. Some disassembly and assembly is required to install. Clean out any and all old grease along with any worn bits of metal or plastic from the old gears. Thoroughly repack all the gears in the forward portion of the housing with a heavy grease such as "Food Grade Grease & Gasket by Ohoho - Compatible With Kitchen Stand Mixer," or "Impresa Products 4 Oz Food Grade Grease for Stand Mixer Universally Compatible."

Great.
This was only a few bucks more than the cheap gear's you see on Amazon and I got the whole housing so I didn't have to worry about getting the gear out. It fit perfectly, added some food grade grease and put the unit back together and it works great. I still have to test it out on the meat grinder attachment to make sure it holds up to that heavy load so I'll update my review after my final testing but so far so good.

Fits perfectly, works well.
My K5SS began to skip and fail after over 39 years of dutiful service. As I suspected it was the principal transmission gear that was at fault with some of the gear teeth missing. Ordered this part to replace the tower. Fit perfectly and after applying some food safe grease, turned on and was back in service. Looking forward to continued utility with the ‘built like a tank’ KitchenAid!

Not the part in the picture but still works.
The pictures for this product are misleading. It does not come in a small bag like on the first picture. The gear is black and not yellow and the inside is plastic and not copper like in the picture. It still fits. I installed it in my Kitchenaid K5-A, re-greased it, closed it up and it is running. I have no idea how long this will last. I will update if/when it breaks. I am using my mixer to knead dough once a week and it has to work hard. I wanted to safe a step by buying the whole assembly but it is really not that difficult. I have kept the old one and it will go back in once this one breaks. Update: changing stars from 4 to 1. I guess you get what you pay for. I have baked (mixed) only 3 loafs and at the third it broke again. The worm gear is shot again. I know these break. Its the reason for their existence, but the old one lasted 2 years with 2 loafs every week. This one only 3 loafs. Now I have to buy a new one and open the mixer up again. I will try to get a refund.
