Ok, so to dispel some of the previous reviews, it is important to note that this IS wood for the shelving. The smell is likely the polyurethane used to treat the wood to protect it. If you have ever stained furniture/wood, you are familiar with the smell. It's nothing to lose your %^&$ over!Also, the previous reviews are correct- the metal is clearly blue, not black as it appears in the photo. I happen to be putting this in a room with a little bit of a blue theme so it didn't bother me, but I might have been a little annoyed if it was going someplace else and I expected black.All of that being said, these shelves are seriously awesome. They look great, goes together super easy, and really sturdy. Pretty darned awesome!

This is a terrific shelving unit for a very reasonable price. We are using it on our sun porch to hold gardening tools, potting soil, planter pots, etc. It looks great and is strong and sturdy. The wood shelves aren't the best quality, but they serve the purpose. A couple of the shelves had dents on the edges when we unpacked them, but we just put the dents in the back. No big deal, and the shelves are supposed to have a rustic look anyway. It took my husband and I about 30 minutes to put this piece together, and it was very easy. Everything you need is included.

Just as described. A couple shelves had little dings on them, but otherwise they are great. Very sturdy with industrial look, and a very reasonable price. Super easy to put together.

I actually really do love this bookshelf. It’s heavy duty, the wood shelves are hardly and thick, and I put it together in 20 minutes by myself with “help” from my toddler. However, there’s two things that are preventing me from giving it five stars. 1) it’s blue, not black. Very irritating to be honest. I saw other reviews mentioned this, but in the product description it specifically said brown and black. It’s a navy blue and black. Knocked off 1.5 stars for that because now I had to spray it black next time I take it apart. 2) The right side legs came with white plastic leg caps. The left side legs did not. This makes the entire book shelf very wobbly. I emailed them regaridng the missing caps but I’m getting the run around over four plastic caps. Seriously. Im very unimpressed with the customer service in getting. I’d return if I could at this point.

This is a cheap bookshelf. Looks rustic and solid, but the boards are cheap, the metalScrews will strip easily, and it’s wobbly on hardwood floors.

I have and industrial style loft apartment and this shelving unit fits in perfectly with my other furniture pieces. The shelving space is quite generous, so make sure to store bigger books or accent pieces on it, lest it look awkward.The wood is real and feels very nice to the touch. While some reviewers have complained about the blueish hue to the metal pipes, I think it adds a bit of decorative distinction. However, if you truly want solid black piping, don't buy the piece (and, it really only reveals the blueish hue on close inspection or in bright light, so not that big of a deal if it's not your thing).This item would easily cost two to three times as much at Potter Barn or West Elm, so it is quite a good deal.Jump on it!

Looks great, easy to put together, seems sturdy. VERY strong chemical odor when it came out of the box. There was a note that said this product contains materials known to cause cancer by the state of California. Did not love that.

This holds a massive amount of books. I selected this bookcase because I thought I could replace the wood shelves with 2 x 16 inch pine boards from Lowes if the shelves sent from the manufacturer eventually warped. I was surprised at the quality and don't think I will have to go this route though.Often furniture that is shipping via UPS arrives in damaged condition and I can say this product was very well packed. The shelves were packed "face" to "face" and individually wrapped in paper so there are no scratches on the surface of the shelves. The corners of the shelves were padded with cardboard so this prevented the wood from denting. In addition, there was styrofoam packing to protect the corners of the shelves.Color: there is a slight blue cast to the metal. The shelving is solid pine with some slightly uneven staining. The "fumes" some that some consumers are referring to is a standard wood varnish and once the box was opened it dispersed nearly immediately. There are very few knots in the wood - which I think adds industrial character.The directions for assembly were exemplary and there were actually stickers on the surfaces of the shelving unit thus removing any doubt as to "what goes where." It took 20 minutes to assemble. To assemble this item it was easiest to:1. Lay one metal shelf bar face down on your floor (on its side), align the wood shelf and partially screw in. Note well there is a front and a back to this shelving unit - so make sure you are facing the best side of each wood shelf to the front2. Repeat for the other 5 shelves.3. While the shelving unit is laying on its side you can then attach the second metal shelf bar, and screw in each wood shelfIt comes with a wall safety strap.Overall I am very pleased with the item and will probably order a second shelf.
