Excellent
Some of these people are crazy. I did not expect much from this. I was initially concerned that it was dull and they simply painted over the edge. After a good number of passes, I wore off the pain covering the edge (normal use) as the paint came off the cutting edge it preformed better and better. I have done several black walnut logs 30" wide and between 10' and 16' long. Also a few butternut logs or roughly the same dimensions but maybe a touch smaller. I HAVE NEVER SHARPENED IT ONCE!!!! It holds a good edge. It's not sharp like a precision chisel but it does not need to be!!!?? I also rounded a lot of corners to make some rustic benches, well over 150' if lined up... Again, not sharpened once. I finally dulled the blade today. I used it other than intended to scrape some industrial film off a pipe. That is a job that usually takes 2 people 12hrs. I did it solo in about 8hrs with this thing. It was metal on metal and at a high angle to scrape. I rounded a decent butt on the edge doing so. A quick pass with a good file cleaned it right up..... If I were to do fine wood working I would probably want something better but would expect to pay mid hundred dollars or so. That is not what this is..... If you are debarking a tree, it is amazing right out of the box. I would have been happy paying twice as much..... As to the people who clamed to ruin the edge on some nots, you were either EXTREMELY unlucky or you didn't realize that you did indeed cut though a nail. Now that messed mine up (again MY FAULT) I am about to buy another. That is why I'm leaving a comment now. I will say, I prefer to use it upside down and hold an angle myself, it seems to work better that way. I am also doing rather large logs. It would be nice if it were slightly wider but, if you are doing normal size logs, this will work just fine. It still works fine on the larger logs, just need to be mindful of some nots on the side so you don't bust up your knuckles. Good luck all and definitely a great choice for down and dirty stuff.

Listen to the reviews. This works great but expect to sand/grind the paint off the edge. It is there to keep it from being dangous and am guessing to keep it rust proof till sold. I read the reviews and expected this thick paint. IT IS NOT READY OUT OF THE PACKAGE. It will be dull. Expect that. I sanded and filed the edge off and this works great. It is not magic, it is still work. If you buy a rake or shovel you still have to put forth the effort. Doesn't mean the rake or shovel are bad. There is a small learning curve of about 10 or so min if you haven't used a draw knife like me. I am still getting better at it. Don't be fooled at how simple and easy You Tube makes this look, even sharp it is a bit of elbow grease, think of it as a good work out. Have fun shaving

Opinion after using for one season.
I bought this to strip bark before milling. It is good quality, strong, and very durable. It does not come sharpened like a knife blade, instead it is dull which is perfect for me. Sharpness seems to be a big topic of discussion, and I think this is a matter of preference and species of tree. I have only dealt with Oak. The dull blade slides under the bark stripping it away smoothly where a sharp blade would bite into the wood, jam you up and not separate the bark so easily. This was a concern of mine as I have never used one of these before, but after using this the dull blade makes perfect sense. Perhaps my opinion will change after working with different species and in that case I'll probably buy another one to keep sharp but that remains to be seen. I thought of sharpening this one but I'm not going to try and fix something that works this good.

Comfortable
Great tool! Pulled out of the box, attached the handles to the blade and was ready to go. Blade is painted over with black paint. I thought about taking it off with a grinder. But found that after about 5 or so minutes, the paint started chipping away and the blade was working much better. Size is good for smaller logs. I would go for a 10" blade for bigger projects. Over all, easy to use tool. Comfortable in the hands. Sharp under the paint. Seams like a durable blade!

This is a fine tool - Vermont Woodworker
This is a good tool for the money. Attention everyone all good woodworking steel (chisels, pull knives, etc.) uusally come unsharpened to various degrees. This arrived beveled and coated with a think coat of good paint. It took five mintes sitting down on the porch with a file I use for hatchets and axes to hone the edge and start using. Please be aware this is very hard steel and can be difficult to sharpen and will chip and even break if mishandled. This is intentional since the hardness ensures a long wearing edge. All who order something like this need to learn sharpening! It is an essential skill and an important one. Enjoy!

Unhappy
Really needed sharpening. The edge was rough and required a lot of work.

Works great and makes life easier
Great tool for the price. I had two 18ft logs to strip and was able to relatively quickly remove all the cambian layer and sap wood. My only small complaint was the handles would sometimes become a little loose even with the stop nut but it was never enough for the handle to become loose and wall more just a twist which would send my knuckles into the log. It was more comfortable over a long period than the antique solid steel draw knife I was using especially because it was lighter. The removable slip cover is also a nice touch and makes storage easier.

Wood working tool
My husband really likes this tool. He says he can finish his projects faster now he has this. I am happy that he's happy with a tool to make his work easier. It glides easy and he's able to control the depths cleanness of his cuts on the wood projects.
