I would like to use my own stone holder, how can I remove the base from the stone?

This stone is set into the base. It doesn't appear that it's supposed to be removed. I suppose it can be removed if you pry it up but it doesn't seem to be designed that way.

I already have the king kds 1000/6000 combination stone. does this stone make a noticeable improvement over the 6000 grit stone?

I have a 6000 and I do notice an improvement in the sharpness of the edge and the finish it puts on the blade.
