Revolting Rhymes

I laughed and laughed. When I shared one of the poems with friends in a poetry group, they also laughed. We need more revolting rhymes in our lives. Recommended for anyone who grew up with nursery rhymes and needs a good laugh now.

This is an absolute scream of a book with multiple fairy tales told in rhyme and a definite twist. Reading aloud makes them even funnier.

We bought this book to read to our three year old daughter and she absolutely loved it, especially the two stories with the Big Bad Wolf. We also gifted this book to my brother-in-law who is almost 40, and it made him laugh out loud. The rhymes and the twisted story plots are creative and entertaining. Unlike other reviewers here, we are not concerned that Roald Dahl calls Cinderella a "slut." We are not raising our child in a household that worships princesses anyway. We instead love the socialist overtones and the knocks he makes on austerity. Funny.

Want to get a good laugh? Try Revolting Rhymes by Ronald Dahl! He added his British adult twist to our garden variety fairytales that leaves one laughing so hard, ones tummy hurt from stitches! Goldilocks was made to look like the crook she really was, for breaking, entering, and stealing porridge! Then the big bad wolf in “Little Red Riding Hood” got tricked when he got called out for wearing his furry coat in bed! This author is long gone ahead of us, but he left his brand of humor behind in his writing for all of us to enjoy!

From the brilliant mind that gave us "James and the Giant Peach," "Matilda," "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and many others comes this lesser-known book that I grew up with. I adored this book as a kid, though beware, as the rhymes are indeed "revolting" and some include language that I'm not comfortable reading aloud to my third and fourth grade students ("slut" being one that comes to mind in this version of Cinderella). With some minor alterations, however, this book makes many laughs and is a cherished part of my Dahl collection.

Only 5 stars? It takes at least 5,000 stars to praise this unique collection of traditional fairytales told in an all different way. Painfully hilarious -to your abs- but most of all, wise. It is precious for kids, invaluable for adults. I have made several new friends just by quoting o few phrases and I have bought more than 20 copies for people I know and they all still consider it as the best gift ever offered to them. A very expansive affordable Christmas gift.

Roald Dahl was a genius, and it shows here. You'll have a great time reading it to kids and adults alike. Way to go, Snow White! And so many more. There's also an animated DVD that improves on the original by tying some of these stories together. If you get one, get the other as a companion. They don't fully overlap, and the uniqueness of each one is a positive thing.

Great book

I simply love this book and its author!

If you've got a slightly dark sense of humor and a love for unadulterated Dahl's work you will love this book. These rhymes are hilarious versions of the fairy tales we all love, but those who are expecting rainbows and unicorns will be appalled. Example: in Cinderella's tale one of the ugly sisters is beheaded and that's just for starters. I however love this book and always have. Even as a child it made me laugh. I loved it. Got it again as a birthday treat to myself because my old copy is in terrible condition. But when I was a kid I read everything and anything so I am not a good example. If you're thinking about getting the Rhymes for a kid maybe check it out before you make a present of it. Some kids may be "traumatized" and some parents may be offended. Baffles me but that's people for you. However I can't recommend it enough to those who just love a good laugh. Especially if you can appreciate beautiful poetry too. The original illustrations typical of Dahl's work are another delight of this edition too. Wonderful Roal Dahl.

There is music in Roald Dahl's words. The rhymes are anything but revolting. They are in the genre of delightful nonsense poetry. The book is full of fun and humour.
