Install guidance is vague but not impossible
To do it yourself... you should be fairly savvy and intuitive. Hardware is easy if you can make sense of what the connections look like on the vehicle and basically where they are at. The end goal is to put this unit in between the connections, integrating it into your ignition system. It's all going to basically be in the column of your vehicle, and up near your key ignition for the (Key chip sensor). The OBD wire set is to allow integration into the vehicles system while still allowing access to the OBD port. The manual has the basic information serving multiple models of each make. There is one video example for the fords that serves all of the models. The video didn't completely apply to my 2017 Escape or 2014 F150. Just make sure for the year of escape you're programming that you have the right color combination showing on the unit when programming the newer models of Escape. I was expecting-like the video showed- to have red, yellow and blue show when programming. It dawned on me that I needed to hold the programming button until only the red and Blue showed, then I would need to release it. Then finish my last connection. (Same with my f150). Escape install time was 45 minutes fumbling slightly. 20 minutes programming it because I wasn't getting that I was using the wrong color combination. After the Escape, my F150 took 10 minutes install and program, 5 minutes getting the the connections. The second install was way easier because I knew what to expect, and the connection locations and connectors are similar. The company would benefit from going into more detail in their install manual for more successes. However, I'm happy with the system. It works well and I get to use factory keys. Now to see how long it lasts!

Easy to install, confusing to program
It was pretty easy to install the remote start device in our 2014 Ford Escape. But programming it was a little confusing, primarily because Start-X website links to a video of an installation video for a F-150 which has a totally different programming sequence than for my Escape. Following the programming procedure listed in the manual was the way to go. You need a T25 and a 7mm socket to undo the plastic cover on the bottom of the steering column. For programming, we held down the programming button and plugged in the black four pin connector. We kept the button held until the LEDs started blinking, and when the red and blue LEDs were illuminated at the same time, we let go of the button. We then plugged in the other connectors and then started the key programming sequence. First key in, and rotate to on, waiting for the three bings. Turn off and remove key one, put key 2 in and rotate to on, waiting for the three bings. Turn off and remove key then press and hold the programming button for three seconds. After that, it blinks some LEDs and eventually turns the car to on, and then off again. At this point it should be programmed and work with the three presses of the lock button on the remote control. I like that the kit was all plug-in with no wires to cut or splice. With the car off, we set the defroster to high and when the car was remote started, the defroster came on, which will be very useful during the winter.

I like it!!
My son, who is a mechanic, installed this within 30 minutes. It works great, no problems, no issues, so far!

The video doesn't necessarily show your vehicle.
My remote starter kit was easy to install. Each connector could only be connected to one location, basically making it idiot proof. Since my vehicle had a newer connector (2017) it had to have an extra harness to compensate for the manufacturer change. My issue came when it would not acknowledge the module. So, I took off the whole kit and my car wouldn't start correctly and when it did, every time I put it in gear the car shut off. I had to contact support through email. It took multiple emails and days to finally get to the root cause. Believe it or not, it was caused by a 5A blown ignition fuse. Also, you may have to Google how to get the steering column cover off since the video shows a truck installation. Overall, it was frustrating because of the fuse issue but not the fault of Start X. The only reason I didn't give it a five-star overall rating is because it has only been in service for a month or so. Waiting to see how well it works in the long run.

Do it yourself 5/5 (no second remote huge bonus)
This is my second purchase from this company, one for Honda and one for a Ford. Amazingly easy to set up, although the instruction leave no room for skimming or stupidity. You need to slowly follow the instructions and understand what you're ready but anyone who can put a Lego set together can install this. Pros: No extra remote on my key chain, this starts by pressing lock on original key three times! Safety, shuts off after 15 mins, and doesn't let you drive away without inserting key and turning to on (if you press brake pedal to shift out of park the car shuts down) I've started this from about 100 feet away! Inside a building! The distance is astounding. If you can unlock or lock your car you can start it. Cons The instructions feel incredibly simple and it may seem they're not very good but they're very specific, if you follow them word for word you will have no issues, I've done it as fast as 20 minutes on my second vehicle. You NEED two keys for this model, I didn't for my Honda and I'm not sure why you do here but it's worth mentioning if you only have one key you'll need to get a second key and flash it. Amazing product overall and I'm ashamed I didn't do this years ago!

Just watch youtube for detailed install. Pretty easy plug and play. Works as advertised so far.

Installed the Start-X Remote Starter Kit on my Ford Escape and it works really well. The instructions were clear and the install was pretty easy compared to other kits I’ve done. One thing to note is that you do need two keys for it to work, but once set up, it starts the vehicle perfectly every time. Great product and worth it for the convenience.

Awesome product. I decided to install it myself and it was an absolute breeze. Not difficult in the least. The hardest part was getting the top cover of my steering wheel column. Everything just plugged in, and the programming was even easier. I just youtube'd the product along with the make and model of my vehicle, and a video showing how to install it popped right up. Oh, and it works as intended. Can't believe a back yard "mechanic" quoted me $150 to install it. 🤣 What a rip off that would of been.

The instructions do not align with the video. Followed instruction to the letter without success. The plug in part was easy as advertised. The actual function did not happen. I did a reset and repeat of the steps over 6 times. Brought in an independent second party to follow along with the Instructions to ensure I wasn't missing something in the procedure. The same outcome each time. The 3 lock selection turns the ignition power on but no start up occurs. I have emailed the troubleshooting website in hopes of a solution but honestly it ruined christmas for me as a Dad. I bought this as a surprise for my daughter's car to help her with our cold winters here in Alberta. My daughter was so happy with her gift from me and I felt so good. Then 7 hours of trying everything take the start x system to work was a huge disappointment. I dont know what to do now. My money is gone but I don't even care about that. It was the epic fail and the disappointment of my daughter who politely said, "It's OK Dad, I loved that you tried your best.' Needless to say I only have a 1 star and that was more than generous based on plug In ease and that it turned power on but that's it. In closing Caveat Emptor ( buyer beware)

Bought this for a 2013 Escape SE. For the 2013 Escape - some difficulty on the install, instructions for the programming are not great. Est. time for install and programming is about 45-60 minutes and about a 5/10 for difficulty (while not breaking anything). The instructions for the install were not great nor the linked YouTube "How To" video. The included programming steps are not great either. There are videos on YouTube to show you how to program it so it works, thankfully. If it stops working I'll update the review.
