Great Utility Room Fan
Fan installed easily and the damper works great. We used to have a plain small window with screen in our utility room. I was able to remove the window and install this vent. It works great and with the damper I don't have to worry about hot/cold air coming in through fan in the summer/winter months. It moves a lot of air. It is fairly noisy but for our utility room w/toilet it is a perfect unit. Product is quality made and it appears that if something fails it should be easily fixed/replaced.

The exact solution I was looking for.
I bought this fan to go through the wall of an exercise room I use with my wife. It can get pretty humid in there especially in the summer. The fan works well, Is reasonably quiet and was simple to install if you are comfortable with basic wiring and construction. Broan customer service can help you determine if you are buying the rigt size fan for your application. I tapped off an existing 120v outlet and brought power to a fan wall timer and speed control on a 2 gang box. I can adjust the speed of the fan and the duration it stays on. I could not use a ceiling fan in my situation so through the wall is a nice alternative. The fan comes with a self closing external damper to keep weather out. They even make a model with a built in switch if you need it. I had to go through a 12 inch cinderblock wall and then my studwall but is was easy and inexpensive to extend the length of the fan sleeve with off the shelf 8" round duct from a big box diy store.

It's loud
I installed this fan to replace my 40+ year old Nutone wall exhaust fan which still worked fine but had gotten too grungy and didn't compliment the new tile backsplash. The new one is just as loud as the old one. Yes, I read the sound rating so I knew there would be some type of loudness associated with this fan but I didn't expect it would be just as loud after 40 years of technological achievements. The installation was fairly easy since the hole was already in the house. The only annoying part is that my kitchen is on the second floor so I had to stay outside on a ladder at that height for awhile to rip off the out metal housing and install the new one. Wiring was simple ( three wires). After it was installed I found that the new backsplash meant I couldn't use the furnished switch knob or the threaded rod that held the plastic grill in place. I replaced that threaded rod with a longer one but when you screw it back on you'll notice the plastic grill is flimsy and can't be tightened very much or it will crack it. If Broan spent a couple more bucks to make a thicker plastic or stamped metal grill it would be more efficient. I had no choice but to order the longer plastic switch knob. The cost of the longer knob was about $4-5.00 and shipping was about $7.00. Although the knob arrived in a week, it only lasted for about a week. The end cracked right off at the switch end. Seems its very flimsy and if you turn the switch on the wrong way (there's no letters or arrows to indicated ON or OFF) then you can kiss it goodbye after a couple of times . I call Broan and explained what happened and to their credit they sent me a new one for free. I got the feeling they've had these calls before so there was no real resistance or hesitation to resend me one. I also called their tech support line and the woman I spoke to was very knowledgable and patient with my electrical connection questions. In hindsight, I should have ordered the model with the remote 2 speed switch because it's still a stretch to the corner of the wall where it's located, and at the lower speed it wouldn't be as loud. I gave 4 stars only because of their cost cutting solutions by using the cheaper material that failed, and would it kill them to included 2 different size plastic knobs and threaded rods. It would probably cost them another dollar or less and that would keep their customer reps free for more important customer service questions."We're experiencing longer than expected wait times"

A good exhaust fan for high humidity indoor pool area
I have two of these in an enclosed swim/spa area attached to our home. Over years, the humid environment caused one of them to stop working. I replaced both of them, at the same time, using the same model. I re-used parts of what was already installed, such as the thru-wall ducting, and exterior vents, but I replaced the worn springs on the vent baffle with the new ones, and all of the internals. These were a great deal from Amazon, though one of the units which I purchased had been returned and didn't have all of the mounting parts. A quick call to Broan, though, and they were able to send just the missing parts with no hassle so I didn't have to return everything to Amazon. Good performance, and I hope another several years of life out of these new units.

Stunningly effective but, too loud for a bathroom fan
I have the “Broan-NuTone 509S Through-the-Wall Ventilation Fan” installed as a bathroom exhaust fan, and I don’t know if that was the proper use case. Does it work? YES! In less than five minutes, ANYTHING - smell, humidity, even the dog - will be sucked out of the room. It’s comically effective. I can feel the wind escaping in the direction of the fan on my body. It is LOUD. As LOUD as an upright vacuum or shop vac. With the addition of the noise of the shower and the reflections of the sounds on multiple tiled surfaces, any music on a Bluetooth speaker will be drowned out. With all that being said, the fan isn’t on for longer than five minutes. We have the fan on a hard-wired Humidity Sensor Switch, and the fan turns off very quickly after the completion of a shower and the bathroom door is opened. I don’t know if I would buy this again. It works spectacularly with the telltale fog on the bathroom mirror being eradicated in minutes. Unfortunately, it is way too loud to be pleasant. I also removed one star because it didn't include a bug filter.

Very big, make sure you read the sizes and that they truly are what you need. Performance is on point though, it sucks air like a nymphomaniac that's been deprived for a week.

Kitchen fan fit great

Although it is a bit loud it does exhaust a lot of air quickly. Works fine but was harder to install then expected. If you are running new electrical as well as installing in new location you can bank on taking at least 2-3 hours.

The exterior vent hood is great. Very sturdy and the damper works really well. I had to improvise an 8” piece of duct work to reach all the way through the wall (block, framing and insulation).
