Love this hammer! I literally used it to take a piece of a mountain lol! I highly recommend this hammer it’s the only rock hammer you will ever need! Pays for itself. I left it in a field of schist far away from my house and I drove back to get it that’s how valuable this hammer is! Plus Estwing are the GOATS when it comes to hammers. No brainer!. T

Fantastic for welding and plant/machine repair/ maintenance. Works as a nice little hammer for slight adjustments while welding, chips slag, works as a pry bar, can use handle for leverage, great when cutting can stick thin end through pieces to move hot plates with any small hole. Can use chisel end to line up holes and use hammer to leverage into place OR get another hammer and hit the hammer face to force something to line up or use the tip to get under and create that gap to pry something for one reason or another I have used similar hammers before that were cheaper to save money that offered plastic/fiberglass/resin type handles but they would flex under stress. This hammer has not been abused but worked and pushed and for my particular job needs. It is a piece I look forward to have for years.

Bought as a gift for my wife. It is very well made. It is light enough for her to carry and use all day. Estwing products are good quality. The handles are made to fit the hand, are comfortable and stay in the hand when used-grippy handle.

This is a great hammer, but a little heavier and bigger than I expected. I was looking for a light rock hammer that I could hook on my belt while hiking and exploring. I have a VERY OLD 18 oz. Estwing from my Dad (brown handled hammer in the pic). I think it's at least 60 years old and still strong! But it's a little too heavy for me. I'm 5'5" and 130 lbs. I thought a 13 oz. hammer would be about right, but it's essentially the same size as my Dad's old hammer, just ever-so-slightly lighter (blue handled hammer). Hmmm...maybe I need to look for a kid's version!!

First off, this is my second Estwing geohammer, the first was purchased over 40 years ago and was heavily used professionally in the field. Once I left the field it was put in storage where it eventually disappeared. The new one is the “lightweight” version which is perfect for my current hobby trips in the field. It is ample for light duty rock breakdown, is easier to carry and so far works well. If I needed a more aggressive tool I’d have purchased the regular heavy version. This one is highly satisfying and recommended. I see than many Amazon reviews are by folks who know little about geohammers, or hammers in general. First, all hammer weights are based on the weight of the hammer head, not the total weight of the tool. This is traditional going back to the time when all hammers had wooden handles. For example, a five pound sledge hammer weighs more than five pounds - just the steel head weights that much. This geohammer has a head weight of about 13 ounces and a total weight of one and one-half pounds. Understanding a tool’s terminology helps to avoid incorrect purchases and disappointment. One of the first things I was taught as a budding geologist was that the pointy end of a geohammer is seldom used in the field - the blunt end does 90% of the work required. If you try to pound the pointy end much on hard rock it will bend and become blunt - this is on purpose! If it was tempered hard to withstand the extreme forces from a heavy swing onto very hard rock it would be too brittle and would shatter, potentially injuring the user or a bystander. Machinists should understand this. The pointy end is used for prying apart existing cracks, loosening soil around the edges of rocks, etc. If you don’t know how to use the tool, YouTube has videos made by professional geologists to teach you. There would be fewer unhappy reviewers if folks knew even a little bit about what they are buying.

Excellent for gardening excavations, to get to those pesky tough roots. Nice and light, with nimble balance. When a full size pickaxe is too big, heavy, or cumbersome for the job at hand, this Estwing hand tool is just right. This is actually the lightweight model of the several types of tools in Estwing’s geological rock pick category. So if it’s been developed for use by geologists in the field, it will easily cope with a spot of digging in one’s garden. It is well made, comfortable to use, comes from a company with a well respected pedigree, and is reasonably priced. The famous design of an Estwing hammer, often the choice of professionals, is sturdy and durable. However, the tool is designed for normal sensible use, not for prying sideways. My grandfather had one, many years ago, that broke when he used his Estwing nail hammer to try to pry open a badly jammed window. Similarly with a workman on a job site that used his Estwing drywall (plasterboard) hammer to do something, when a hammer and chisel would have been the right choice. Estwing’s drywall hammer has a rounded and milled (striated) hammer face to slightly sink nails below the surface of the plasterboard, and a thin blade on the other side that resembles a narrow hatchet, a bit like a tomahawk. It looks rugged and sturdy, but it is meant for plasterboard, not brick, concrete, stone, or tile. A badly chipped and damaged drywall hammer was the result of this chap’s misuse of a perfectly good hand tool. The old saying applies, “the right tool for the right job.” So, when used properly, the Estwing rock pick works very well, and is not overly large or heavy. All in all, a good pick.

Solid unit. I've been carrying it to smash rocks etc and it's great. I have a small sledge for rocks that need more persuasion but it gets heavy on hikes. This one is perfect
