The actual opening at the front is 14.5" wide. The depth is 17" on the inside, measuring from front to back.

Q: How many bins can safely be stacked? More than 3?

I have 3 stacked in my laundry room and the bins are sturdy. However, I don't have heavy items in them. I have cleaning towels, gloves, and other lighter items. I think it would depend on what you are putting in the bins on whether you could stack more than 3.
