Q: Using this to test the coil on my vehicle. I get intermittent small reddish flash. Not sure how to interpret this? Is any light a positive sign?

Use the tester in a dim lighting area and when you see the reddish-orange flash, that shows a bad spark. A healthy spark will be more intense with a blueish-white spark. I used this tester on my riding mower on June 1, 2015 and replaced the ignition module (same as a vehicle coil). The tester showed the difference before and after!

Q: How do you use this with a lawnmower that doesn't start? Hooking it up is simple, but then what? Pull the recoil starter rope & look at the light?

Yes, if it starts the light will flash everytime the sparkplug sparks. If it does not start the light will flash everytime the sparkplug gets power and then you know it is not an electrical problem. It can then be either a bad sparkplug or a fuel problem. If it does not flash when you pull the rope then it is an electrical malfunction (ie. magneto, points, or electronic ignition problem). Always test your light to make sure it works on something else that runs.
