Ubiquiti UniFi Switch 8 60W (US-8-60W),White

I have used Ubiquiti Unifi gear for three years now and the Enterprise Class Network devices and integrated management make this a wise choice. I've installed Unifi for four friends of mine as well. This is actually my third Unifi switch in my home. I have one other Inifi Switch 8 60W and the Unifi Switch 24 250W. I also have a Unifi USG and two of their excellent Unifi AP-AC Pro access points. I also recently upgraded from a Cloud Key Gen1 to a Gen2. When you decide to opt into the Unifi line of equipment you are making a decision to bring Enterprise class networking into your home. In order to configure and manage Unifi network devices you need to run the "Unifi SDN Controller software". The Unifi SDN is where you make all the changes and settings to Unifi devices. Unlike consumer class network devices, Unifi devices are not managed, configured or monitored from a web server embedded on the device. Instead, the Unifi SDN makes secure socket connections to the target devices for management. One way to understand this is that you can configure one wireless access point and then add ten more access points with a single click and they are automatically configured with the SSID's that you have defined on your network. You can run the Unifi SDN on Windows, Linux, Mac or a Unifi Cloud key. I have run the Unifi SDN on Windows, MacOS, Linux, and as a Docker image from my NAS. After plenty of experience, I decided that a Unifi Cloud Key was a much better choice since it is a dedicated environment from which you run just the Unifi SDN. Although it is not necessary to run the Unifi SDN 24x7, it is a great advantage to run it from a device like the Cloud Key for realtime monitoring, reporting and statistics. This Unifi 8 port POE switch is completely manageable, which means that it allows for the creation and management of multiple VLANS and four of the eight ports are Power Over Ethernet (POE). I've used the POE ports to support both my Unifi Access Points and also several POE cameras I have around my property. I've included a picture of this latest Unifi 8 port POE switch that I have which is handling my Family Room entertainment center connection to my Samsung QLED Smart TV, a Roku 3, a PS3, a Raspberry Pi running OSMC, and a camera which monitors the area when we are gone. The visual indicators on the Switch itself and on the GUI let you know if a device is communicating and at what speed and if the attached device is drawing POE power, you get the exact wattage that is being used on that device. The only downside to this switch is that it is passively cooled and needs to be used in a well ventilated area because it does run hot. My summary recommendation if to seriously consider this device, but to also consider a Unifi Cloud Key with it. As long as you make the dive into the Unifi Ecosystem, also consider the USG or USG Pro as your router to complete the integrated suite of devices.

This device was a breeze to configure and I am currently using POE for two devices. I am powering an access point and a cloud key using POE so the power draw in minimal, however I have noticed the device does run hot and luckily I have installed it on a shelve that has an open weave metal construction so that it can get better airflow. I also noticed that the USG I have runs hot as well and decided to place the network gear on the open weave metal shelve to improve cooling for the devices. Still with that little nit pick being the only downside I would not hesitate to recommend Ubiquiti products to anyone. Fantastic products, beautiful construction, all devices have been stable since installation and have not any trouble.

Did a bunch of research on hardware for a PFSense router and the specs on this unit were hard to believe for the cost. I removed the 16GB msata card and installed a 64GB Dogfish msata just for more storage, not sure that was really needed. Installation of PFSense was quick and painless. Setup of PFSense took a few videos to understand but worth it. My setup includes the PFSense router, two 8-port Unifi switches and for now eero wifi mesh, going to replace Unifi POE Access Points. Everything worked as it should and transfer rates are much better than with the eero acting as my router behind AT&T. I have the my eero's (3 of them) is Bridge mode allowing PFSense to take care of all DHCP, NAT, and port forwarding. Power consumption: 11 watts average over 48 hour period. If you plan to make the move to PFSense, make sure you purchase quality switches and access points so you can take advantage of the vlan capabilities. Never going back to consumer grade hardware for my home.

Just switched over to Unify for my home network tech and away from the mash-up of the standard spattering of consumer grade devices - after many years of Cisco and Juniper experience in the infrastructure designs I make I always forget just how dismal those consumer grade products are. I finally stopped being cheap and stepped up to the Unify plate and have to say I am pleasantly surprised at how they brought functionality of what you get in those stupidly overpriced to buy, license, and maintain systems into this affordable package for the discerning home user. So far the overall tech is great, having a VM guest with a controller on it that is NOT built into the devices for single pane-of-glass management is what I was missing from home without having to kluge together several crappy apps that I am trying to "freeware" to make work.... I am sorry I waited this long to make the jump! If you are considering these devices, I would recommend giving them a try. You will hear and get a lot of different reviews from some of the deep tech folks about how they arent this or arent that - however if you are looking for something that is more capable and savvy than the TP and Net stuff but are not willing to pay the ridiculous big enterprise prices jump in, the water is great!

Très bon Switch. Parfaitement contrôlable via son contrôleur (à installer sur une machine à part, ou acheter leur cloud Key ou l'installer sur un raspberry pi) Quelques infos a prendre en compte - il chauffe beaucoup mais c'est normal il faut simplement que là où c'est installé ne dépasse pas les 50 degré, pour ma part je l'ai mis dans un placard avec un ventilateur 5v (contrôlé via le même raspberry qui sert de contrôleur) qui refroidi tous les petits équipements dedans. La température passe de 37 a 30 a proximité immédiate du switch (par temps de canicule) (Thermomètre Laser) - il ne contient pas de sonde de température interne ce qui aurait été pratique (comme son copain 150W) - on peux avoir uniquement les statistiques des up down sur les ports (aller dans insights > switch stats) celui qui voulait avoir plus peut être déçu comme moi a moins qu'il installer un USG de leur marque, un edge router ou leur point d'accès wifi - on peut très bien éteindre la lumière bleu de Switch. - on peut descativer le poe si c'est pas utilisé. La consommation 60W correspond au max des poe si tous les poe sont utilisés. Sinon c'est 12W sans poe - le uplink peut être n'importe quel port ( comme un Switch normal quoi :) ) - les mises a jour de firmware sont simple et assez régulière ce qui rassure.

Update 30.12.17: Inzwischen läuft mein Unifi Netzwerk seit 9 Monaten stabil und ich habe es erst die letzten Tage erweitert. Es zeigt sich für mich dass es absolut die richtige Wahl gewesen ist, von der Fritzbox auf Unifi umzusteigen. Hauptgrund war ja, dass ich gesehen habe dass bei zunehmendem Alter meiner Kids der Anspruch an ein funktionierendes Netzwerk im Haus rapide ansteigt. Youtube, gestreamtes Fernsehen und Musik, Online Games usw. fordern Performance im Netz. Bei über 12 WIFI-Geräten, die permanent an den Accesspoints hängen und dabei vor allem Multimedia streamen hat die Fritzbox evtl. mit Repeater keine Chance mehr. Mein Setup ist jetzt wie folgt: Modem: Vigor Draytek Router/Firewall: Unifi USG Switch: 2x Unifi Switch 8 - 60W Accesspoints: 1x AP AC LR, 1x AP AC Lite Telefonie: Fritzbox als reiner IP-Client Netzwerkteilnehmer: ca. 20 Geräte Ich habe mein Netzwerk in 3 Netze aufgeteilt: 1x LAN-Management (wo die Unifi-Komponenten drin laufen) 1x Home-Netz 1x Netz für die Kinder Die Netze habe ich aus Sicherheitsgründen untereinander geblockt. Allerdings ist es möglich den Router so zu konfigurieren, dass trotzdem die Kids den Drucker im Home-Netz nutzen können. Die beiden Accesspoints decken das gesamte Haus über 3 Stockwerke mit einem genialen WLAN-Signal ab. Ich habe keine Verbindungsabbrüche mehr, Roaming zwischen den beiden AP's merke ich bei keinem der Geräte. Die Performance ist erstklassig und zu 100% stabil. An der unten stehenden Begeisterung hat sich nichts geändert. Im Gegenteil: Die damals noch empfundenen Nachteile sind durch regelmäßige Softwareupdates inzwischen aufgehoben. Ein VPN-Zugang ist möglich, DynDNS wird durch das USG gestellt. Der zweite LAN-Ausgang am USG ist inzwischen nutzbar. Ich kann jedem, der den Invest nicht scheut, absolut nur zu diesen Komponenten raten. Durch die Nachbesserungen habe ich jetzt 5 Sterne vergeben. ********************************************************************************************************* Ich schreibe diese Rezension gleichlautend für alle meine Unifi Komponenten: Ein Unifi Security Gate (USG), einen Unifi Switch 8 60W, einen Unifi Access Point AP AC LR und einen Unifi Cloud Key als Controller des Netzwerkes. Ich bin über das Internet (Youtube) auf Unifi aufmerksam gemacht worden. Nachdem ich selbst inzwischen im Haus über 150 qm und 3 Stockwerke mit der Abdeckung durch Powerline, Repeater und Fritzbox bei insgesamt 20 Endgeräten am Netz an die Grenzen gekommen bin, weil vor allem die Kinder mehr und mehr Datenvolumen durch Youtube, Games und Video-Streaming ziehen, musste ich etwas an der Netzwerkkonfiguration ändern. Die oben genannten Komponenten arbeiten hervorragend miteinander zusammen. Ich behaupte, wir befinden uns hier schon im semi-professionellen Bereich was die Performance angeht. 1.) Der Access Point deckt das gesamte Haus lückenlos ab - ohne Repeater (wenn auch das hinterste äußerste Eck etwas knapp ist, aber wenn ich ein Signal habe, dann bleibt es stabil) 2) Ich habe vor Umrüstung und nach Umrüstung einen Helios Test laufen lassen, bei dem Daten auf meine Diskstation geschaufelt wurden und die Zeiten gemessen worden sind. In beiden Fällen war die angeschlossene Hardware exakt dieselbe (iMac -> Synology Diskstation 916+) und dazwischen einmal die Fritzbox und dann das neue Unifi Netzwerk. Ergebnis: Das Unifi Netzwerk war doppelt so schnell in den Ergebnissen (jetzt weiß ich nicht ob die Diskstation eventuell die Performance ausgebremst hat und der Unterschied noch krasser gewesen wäre mit einer schnelleren DS). Auch bei meinen Kids ist beim Online-Gaming über Powerline festzustellen, dass das Netzwerk deutlich stabiler eine gleichbleibende Leistung bringt und die Latenz nicht mehr zwischen 25 und 150 ms schwankt, sondern konstant bei 25-30 ms bleibt. Das war bei absolut gleichen Hardware-Komponenten vorher über die Fritzbox nicht der Fall. 3.) Der Preis ist meines Erachtens für die gebotene Leistung in Ordnung ABER: Einen Stern ziehe ich ab, denn Unifi ist einerseits absolut nicht selbsterklärend. Das Manual ist nichts anderes als eine Referenz-Buch und die Software ist noch sehr stark in der Entwicklung. Heißt, es erfolgt zwar eine hervorragende Produktpflege und laufend kommen Updates mit tollen neuen Features, aber bis jetzt gibt es in der regulären Controller Software noch ein paar Lücken, die erst über das Stable Candidate gelöst wurden und dort dann noch BETA-Status haben: - Anbindung über VPN - DynDNS, hier gibt es nur minimale Auswahl an Anbietern (gut das kann ich über die Diskstation lösen, wer das nicht hat -> Pech) - Funktion des zweiten LAN-Ausgangs am USG ist noch tot (außer im BETA) - Software zwar in Deutsch, Dokumentation komplett in Englisch Man muss also schon ein gewisses Grundverständnis für Netzwerke mit bringen, sonst ist man m.E. hoffnungslos verloren. Aber Unifi hat auch einige enorm positive Punkte: + Performance, Performance, Performance + der Switch ist "gemanaged", heißt, man kann die Zuweisung auf den Ports detailliert editieren + VLANs können easy eingerichtet werden + Sehr gute Benutzeroberfläche + extrem gute Statistiken und grafische Darstellungen der Datenströme + Extreme Leistung des WIFI Access Points + Trotz der nur englischen Dokumentation und der aktuell stark in der Entwicklung befindlichen Software ist aber die Community und der Support (auch nur in Englisch) hervorragend und super schnell und damit sehr sehr hilfreich Und das sind nur die Pluspunkte, die ich als Laie empfunden habe. Ich würde jedem, der drüber nachdenkt sein Netzwerk schneller, größer und leistungsfähiger zu machen, empfehlen, Unifi anzuschauen. Vorausgesetzt Sie haben ein solides Grundverständnis für Computer und auch ein wenig für Netzwerke. Wer dann Spaß daran hat, ein wenig auszuprobieren und auch neues zu lernen - dem sei Unifi wärmstens empfohlen.

Ubiquiti unifi switches are high quality equipment that provide esterprise level networking for consumers. This is part of a larger setup I have at home, allowing me to do port management in my entertainment cabinet, while also providing 4 POE ports. I only use one of the POE ports to power a unifi access point, the rest are to connect my entertainment equipment. If you essentially need ato use pie for more than a few devices, the 150w version might better suit your needs. Needs some networking knowledge to manage the network and works best when combined with other unifi switches, access points, cloud controllers, and security gateways. Not recommended for a stand alone solution (though it will do a great job).
