How thick can the wall be

I used this on 5/8" drywall. Not sure max thickness but had room to spare.

My hole is closer to 2.75 diameter. Will this work?

Hole is too big. The entire thing is 2.75, so it would just fall in the wall. However you could make a little trim piece to act as a sort of washer for it and it would work
