Bluetooth is Excellent
Yes, it works with Alexa! And quite easily! In fact, so easily, that when I tell my Echo Spot to play music, the Denon stereo turns on instantly. I upgraded to this receiver because I signed on to Amazon Music Unlimited on only ONE of my Echo Spots, the one that talks with this. I am not disappointed. The Denon comes with various sound "modes" for both TV and music, and that's really good. I had those on my old receiver, but these are better, and there are more of them. I skipped the part of the setup where the receiver automatically senses your speakers' volume levels. I wanted to increase the center speaker only, for better dialogue on TV. I called Customer Support, and I was done and happy in under 5 minutes. They are very good. At first, set up seemed intimidating, because you must set up the receiver to the TV and then follow on-screen commands. Also getting on the wi-fi seemed tough at first. But really, neither were. This box is full of features, but if you want to just use it at a basic level, no problem. That's what I'm doing, and I'm working my way up from there. It makes my old stereo system (surround) sound new again. My subwoofer is self powered, and its directions tell me to tell the receiver there IS NO subwoofer. Ok, I did that. No problem. It rocks. I have had Denon products before: a wonderful carousel CD player. So I felt confident buying from them. And they are still as good. TIPS: Before you get started, be certain that you have at least several HDMI cables. Hopefully, your TV has an HDMI ARC out. That really helps. An ethernet cable to your modem is the best way to get this on the wi-fi, so keep your modem/router near the TV and this box and hook them up physically. No sweat. Fast, and it really, really solidifies your network connection. Bottom Line: It is so multi-functioned and modern, that it seems intimidating at first, but actually this Denon is very user friendly. It sounds great! It has oodles of settings for music and TV playback. And . . . Alexa integrates so easily, it's embarrassing. Now I have the entire Amazon music catalogue at my fingertips in my living room. Priceless!

Great unit at a reasonable price!
Hooked it up to my 70 inch wall mounted Sharp Aquos. It wasn’t difficult at all to do. It works great and simple to use. I am severely hearing impaired and this unit has the power to overwhelm me with sound. I have 7 inexpensive 8 ohm speakers that I bought from a pawn shop. I can literally shake the pictures right off of the walls. Like my old Denon this one produces a lot of heat. I set this one on top of the entertainment center to hopefully prevent this unit from overheating the circuit boards and weakening solder joints. I’ve had it hooked up for about two months now and so far not one problem. Adding a center speaker to the far end of the living room where I sit enables me to keep the volume down so not to disturb anyone sleeping. I am very pleased with my purchase. For around $300.00 it’s sure hard to beat.

Nice receiver!
This receiver replaced a 17-year old Denon AVR-1801 receiver. Compared to the old one, it's great to have HDMI switching, Pandora, and AirPlay from my iPhone. I am using this receiver in a 2 zone setup. The main zone is 5.1 used with the TV in the living room. The 2nd zone drives a whole-house speaker system in the rest of the rooms of the house. Setup was very easy, although there were two different firmware upgrades required, each of which took several minutes. The receiver has worked perfectly with the exception of two unexplained disconnects from my wi-fi network. When this happens, the Speaker Setup menu is greyed out. In both cases, power-cycling the receiver fixed the problem. I contacted Denon support, and they are not aware of any similar issues, blamed it on a weak wi-fi signal, and suggested I use wired Ethernet. It sounds like a firmware bug to me. The HDMI i/p scaler (as well as the extra power) were the main reasons I picked this model over the less-expensive AVR-S730h, and it works very well. When watching 1080i video from my cable box on my Vizio M65-E0 4K TV, the picture looks noticeably sharper with the receiver doing the upscaling than if I let the TV do the upscaling itself. When playing stereo sound, the receiver stays pretty cool, but with all 7 channels playing at once, it gets very hot. I was able to use my older Denon receiver in a cabinet with the door closed, but with this new one, I feel like it is necessary to keep the door open. All in all, a nice receiver, and I recommend it.

My 20 year old Sony receiver finally died a final death, and I quickly narrowed down my choice to Denon. This 930H is a 2017 model, was at the same price as current 2018 640H model, and comparing the 940H features to 930H, I don't feel I am missing $300 worth of value, so it was an excellent deal. Setup was very easy, unpack, plug things in, configure inputs and speakers, and go. The rest you adjust and tweak as you get used to the box. First off, the negatives, which are minor, relatively: - No phono input. I do have a non-amped record player, but I already have a device to play it through, so it is not a big miss. It would have been a very nice option to have this. I believe the new 940H does have it. - No analog->digital video converter. If you have analog (RCA) video inputs, you must run an analog video out to your display. This was mildly upsetting when I found out, because I misread the spec sheet and believed I would get it. A minor inconvenience that requires me to switch video inputs on my TV for the infrequent times I use analog sources. - Sleep mode depends on inputs, not outputs. Receiver will not go into sleep mode when I turn off the TV, only when I turn off the input source. This is kind of a big deal, because it will continue to run at full power and it does get hot after a while. I know often people run a receiver in audio-only mode, but it should be an option. - Receiver runs lots of software (not silicon) and it shows. There are periodic, but very rare, bugs and interface freezes that require a power cycle to reset. - No analog audio outputs, except for 1/4 inch headphone jack and (obviously) speakers. This may be a limitation due to HDMI copy protection requirements? There is RCA and component video out, but no audio. Positives: - Nearly every input is assignable. That means you can mix and match all the video and audio inputs to create your own modes. Want video from HDMI 2/DVD and audio from Optical 1/TV? No problem. Once you setup the modes, there is no need to fiddle with any of the settings. Only downside is of course the remote labels do not change when you rename them on the receiver.. - Nearly every aspect of the receiver can be operated from the mobile app, as long as both are on the same wifi network. - Having built-in internet radio streaming is nice. It uses the TuneIn app, so you have a huge selection of stations. Unfortunately, there is no way to tie your HEOS account to your TuneIn account, so your favorites do not carry over. - Receiver can act as a Bluetooth sound device, so pair your phone or tablet and play any sounds through your stereo. - There are lots of HDMI inputs, and as nearly everything these days uses HDMI, this is great. There are also two optical and 4 RCA audio inputs. This is a two zone receiver, and while admittedly I don't need this feature and did not set it up, it looks very confusing to configure and get working. Long term edit (7 months): still working great. There have been 2 software updates available for the box in the mean time, so there is still some active development happening by Denon. The freezes are down to basically nothing, I don't even remember the last time anything happened. For the analog video issue, I ended up buying a USB powered RCA-HDMI converter box. For the sleep mode, I'm just used to manually turning off the receiver. Of course, if you have a universal remote, or a newer smart TV, this can be easily managed automatically. No complaints, very happy with the purchase. I would hope newer models are even better.

My old Yamaha receiver only had 2 HDMI ports and the output died. It still plays but I had to move cables around to play different devices. I compared the S940H and the S930H and couldn't justify the $200 difference. I control the unit with my Harmony remote and it's fabulous, the separation of the channels are amazing especially with Netflix and even with shows that are not true surround this receiver does a great job in making it seem like it does. Take your time in learning the app because you can do everything that the remote does, don't listen to the whiners who just like to complain.

This is a very good AVR unit. We purchased it to replace an older (7 year) Denon unit ( which still works fine). Aside from all the new features this unit is super easy to program, thanks to the TV on screen program menus. The old unit had a complex remote unit while the AVR S930H’s remote offers intuitive menus making set up so straight forward. The Audrssey feature allows very easy calibration to your specific listening environment. It also offers an‘ARC’ communications channel over HDMI cables should one not be using cable or satellite signals. Having HEOS is fine for using second room Bluetooth communications, but not a reason to purchase this AVR. If you believe that Dolby ATMOS, is a future innovation in movies this receiver works very well ! Connecting the unit by Ethernet is also a great way to go as upgrades happen effortlessly. So what is any downsides to the unit? Well it may be price. Yet watch for sales ad they do happen. .
