REVIEW - rOtring 600 3-in-1 Multi-Pen, SILVER
rOtring Multi-Pen, SILVER, 600, 3-in-1, is an excellent ‘multi-pen’ writing instrument. I am one, who’s been a fan of ‘multi-pens’ well over 35 years - Which began in the 80's and my first rOtring and Staedtler purchases (and still have both). This ’600 3-in-1', was purchased back in early 2022, and to date has performed flawlessly... Even being somewhat ‘abused’ by a 3 and 8 yr old Grandsons... And still no issues. The pen is well made - constructed with quality materials - nicely finished - well-balanced for writing & drawing (although abit heavier then other pens) - And comfortable in use. (This from a 70+ yr old guy, with some arthritis and double CMC surgeries, too) Your ink/lead selection is pretty straight forward and presents no issues, and is solid; Simply rotate the pen’s knurled cap - Easy. (Do note - This model has no eraser, as most ‘trio’ pens have) Regarding the ink ‘refill’, the ‘600' using standard “D-1" mini ink cartridges; readily available either here at Amazon or other internet sources. rOtring’s ink is fine, but I prefer a more permanent oil-ink, to their’s. And your leads are standard .05mm, also easily purchased. The rOtring is a great multi-pen - True, it is abit spendy (shop around and you can find it for under $35.00) compared to other’s out there. But, will you ever wear it out; very doubtful, you will - My 22 yr old Granddaughter uses an early version, of one of my rOtring “Trio Pen’s”; used it through college and now uses it her workplace and absolutely loves it... Go figure. Simply put, they are well built pens. If you are looking for a decent - well-built ‘multi-pen’, which writes well and is comfortable, you might want to consider the “600 3-in-1", by rOtring. It is food-for-thought. I know, I like mine. A guy, whom always has a pen -

so far so good
The body feels my favorite mechanical pencils. As just a pencil it feels like a very good body with a third rate mechanism. which, when I look inside the pen, I can see why the pencil lead mechanism is not as robust as a dedicated pencil. I am comparing this multi directly with a Lamy 2000 Multipen (four colors of ink, no pencil). I like the Rotring better, which is a problem. I had made up my mind, sight-unseen, that the Lamy was the pen for me. I'm in middle of a research project and I will be traveling at the end of the month. I wanted a no fuss multipen and this is my third try (after my old favorite Pilot hi-tec-c Coleto 1000 and the Lamy). IDK why but the Rotring 600 3-in-1 just does it for me. I start using it and then forget I'm using it. I'm not tempted to fiddle with the pen, think about refills, compare it with other pens, etc. Refills: I like Uni Jetstream 0.7mm in blue and red. I make most of my notes using the pencil and use the colors the way I mostly always have. I used to use green for dates but red can double on that now. I realize now that I didn't use green much. The lead that comes in the pencil is really good. I need to find out what it is. No way is it the usual HB that comes in most mechanical pencils. I have been using Pilot Neox 4B, which is very black. The stock lead can go nearly as dark with a little convincing, but it can go MUCH lighter than the Neox 4B. Point being, I can get a lot of line variation with just the pencil, which IMO is the best kind of formatting for notes. My #1 favorite is a vintage fountain pen with a flex nib, but I'm done traveling with any fountain pen. It's just not worth the futzing. Anyway, this my favorite multipen type writer. I'm not sure why I don't bond more with my Coleto; I would rate it higher by every criterion except looks - I even like the bigger barrel and the lighter weight. But I just feel distracted using that pen. WIth the Rotring I am still aware of myself using the mech to change colors - and it does draw my eye still, though that seems to be fading. I assume that eventually it will dissolve completely into the background and just work invisibly.

Buy it!
This pen/pencil combo is awesome! It's not my first Rotring so I knew what to expect and it still blows me away how small it is for what it offers. I often find myself needing multiple colors of pens and a pencil and really don't want to be "that guy" with all the pens in his shirt pocket... I carry just this one and it fits every purpose! I replaced the ink cartridges with the Uni Jetstream SXR-200-07 for both a smoother ink and a thicker line, but the ink it comes with isn't bad at all. I like running blue and red ink in this pen and it's nice to know I have options for brands of refills, as well as colors and tip sizes. I think the pencil is stuck at .5mm but that's okay. The weight of this pen is substantial with its brass body and the balance is nice. As is usual with Rotring pens the knurling is perfect, allowing a great amount of grip without digging into the finger. The rotating selector on the back of the pen can be rotated either clockwise or counter-clockwise so you can get to whatever you need in one or two clicks and the clicks are very positive. You can tell a lot of engineering went into this pen. It's totally worth the money.

Easy to select the pen or lead.
Works well. Retracts (which is important for the pencil.) pricy but I like it regardless. Satisfyingly heavy.

I wish Uni made a 3-in-1 version of the Kuru Toga, but the Rotring 600 3-in-1 is the next best thing. It has that very reassuring weight and heft like a Rotring pencil should, a slight rattle can be heard from the cartridges if you knock it about but nothing to worry about. The mechanism is held in place with a friction fit, which is a little bit of a worry long term. Already I've had to squeeze/ovalise the internal silver portion that keeps the mechanism in the body, to increase the friction and ensure it doesn't start pushing itself apart if you are particularly heavy with the pen. The two pen slots take standard D1 cartridge refills so you can swap the supplied cartridges (red and black were in the pen, and a blue cartridge was supplied in the box). The Rotring pen cartridges are good quality, much better than the green D1 cartridges I also bought.
