Art: The Definitive Visual Guide (DK Definitive Cultural Histories)

Really impressed with this book. I have recently taken up drawing again after finishing work, and as well as creating, I wanted to learn a little bit about other painters, and a bit of art history. I've found this book really well produced. Its a beautiful book to flip through, amazingly detailed full colour photos of paintings, and lots of useful information. I tend to just dip in and out rather than reading it from cover to cover, and its helped improve my inspiration for drawing subjects. Only negative is that some of the photos span two pages, and as its a very thick hardcover book, part of the images are difficult to see in full as they disappear into the spine/crease between pages.

The one art book everyone should own. Good overview of art history that touches on major and minor movements throughout time.

The absolute Bible of art history fundamentals. For a layman like me, this has taken my art appreciation to the next level. Free from unexplained Jargon and unnecessary frills, this comprehensive book guides you through the major movements in art history without being condescending. It has helped me to discover what I like why I like it, and what to look out for. Physically it's a good quality book that also looks pretty on a coffee table. 100% recommend. Best purchase in a long time.

An astoundingly beautiful and comprehensive book, Art: The Definitive Visual History lives up to its name. Each page is not only printed on glossy paper but in high resolution and full color, allowing the reader to get the best possible experience of every piece of art included. Many historically significant works are given a two page spread to truly showcase it without distraction. Additionally, the book shows thoughtful layout and design from table of contents and color coded sections to back glossary and extensive index. The format eases the reader into the art world in the first 22 pages (13-35) by exploring different elements of art in the Looking at Art, which breaks down complex ideas into single paragraph summaries with one to three explanatory art pieces as examples. All remaining pages (36-595) are dedicated solely to artists and their pieces broken down into sections by time period, then further categorized by either the region, theme, or movement to which each belongs. I simply cannot recommended this book highly enough. I took many art history and appreciation classes in college and wish I’d been assigned this book as it is so much better than the ones we read. If you can only afford to have one high quality art book on your shelf, this is it.
