Violin Star 2, Student's book, with Audio (Violin Star (ABRSM)) : Huws Jones, Edward: desertcart.co.uk: Books Review: A good starter book - As background I am an adult learner in my 40's with very little musical experience since learning the guitar at school. I was recommended this by a violin teacher, I didn't start with book 1 as they said I should be ok starting with this book. It starts with slurs, but it's not too hard. I am learning on my own, so the cd is really useful to play along to. Each song has it played first on the violin so that you can hear how it sounds and the next track is without the violin as a backing track so that you play along. This book walks you through different techniques that you need to know for grade 1. I would say that you probably still need a teacher to explain some of the techniques as although there are a few activities for you to do, there isn't much explanation before each piece. Overall at £8.50 I think it was a good purchase to start me off on my violin playing journey. Review: Recommended by violin teacher - My daughter has been learning violin for 1 year+ and after completing Violin Star 1, she is now working on Violin Star 2. This book was recommended by her violin teacher and is what they work on in her lessons. She has progressed well playing the pieces in these books. They are not well known songs, but you have to added bonus of the CD to play along with, which makes it fun. Once halfway through Violin Star 2, I believe they would be at a level to start preparing for their Grade 1 exam.

popular with pupils
I'm very much enjoying teaching with the help of the new 'Violin Star series. The repetoire is varied and fun to play. I like the way it includes plenty of repeated phrases, giving confidence to the learner, both in reading and performing the music. Children love the tunes as well as the illustrations and can quickly learn to play along to the sensibly-paced backing tracks. I would prefer a larger font for the music staves, otherwise this is the tuition book I have been waiting for.

Great series
Decent and varied tunes, sensible stepped levels of difficulty and well recorded CD. The backing tracks are appropriate, fun and balanced. Each track has two versions, 1 with backing only and 1 with backing and violin melody over the top. While many books supply the audio in this format, not so many do as good a job at making the music sound interesting, fun and of a decent professional standard. As a music teacher and as a parent, I thoroughly recommend this series.

We have the first version in this series (as recommended by my daughter’s violin teacher). She recommended this book as the next book, which my daughter has just started after a year of violin tuition. I think she does very well with this book as it gets more complex as you go through. She’s 10 years old and still a beginner but definitely is progressing.
