Faster to buy the entire shift lever assembly than to try to repair very fine broken wires
My 2001 Silverado with 175000 miles began to shift erratically on occasion. I also noticed that the TOW/HAUL switch on the tip of the shift lever no longer worked. It turns out that the wire sheathing connecting the tow/haul switch to the wiring harness abrades over time. This results in intermittent ground contact signaling random tow-haul mode to the transmission computer. The only thing not provided with this replacement kit is a couple of zip ties to secure the new wiring to the steering column. If you are in a hurry or just thrifty, you can just try to repair the old wires, but I don't have the necessary soldering tools for the very thin wires. For me, this was an easier repair. One note: the tow/haul labeling on the new shifter knob is different from the original on my truck, but this is strictly cosmetic.
