Love them, but beware, they have a very short shelf life
These were always a "Sunday treat" when I was a kid, or rather slices of a full sized Battenberg were. The Battenberg cake is another one of those quintessentially British food items, being a pink and yellow sponge cake made up of 4 alternate colored squares held together with a thin sweet glue of apricot jam and then covered with a layer of rich marzipan. These cakes are truly delicious but they do have a relatively short shelf-life so eat 'em up quickly! For those who may be unfamiliar with the chequered history of this product, this confection was originally designed in secret in an attempt to assassinate the Baron von Battenberg who, despite his jovial appearance in photographs, was quite a nasty piece of work intent on destabilizing late Victorian Europe. Robert Welles and Agnes Bertha Marshall, both in the employ of The Covert Culinary Operatives (a little-known forerunner of the now defunct British intelligence agency E110) were passed information that the Baron had an "unhealthy addiction to nuts, especially almonds", which they combined with the poorly kept secret that he was a diabetic, into a cunning plan, codenamed "Sunset Yellow" . Through 1898, working independently so as to avoid suspicion, they perfected a highly sugared cake covered with rich almond paste that they knew he would be unable to resist. The culmination of their secretive baking was the Battenberg, a combination of Welles' "Neapolitan Roll" and Marshall's "Domino Cake" When presented with this delicacy at the opening festival of "Der große und wichtige Tanz der Esel" in 1899, the Count was immediately hooked. However, due to his large stature and exceptionally strong constitution, even the huge amount of sugar contained in the Battenberg cake had little effect on him and he survived totally unscathed. Alas, the same cannot be said for at least two, more slightly built, members of his entourage who went into immediate hyperglycemic shock which, untreated, led to ketoacidosis resulting in their untimely demise. The resulting political outrage fueled resentment within the German aristocracy for years, including an understandable ban on almond paste importation, and immediate frosting of diplomatic relations between Britain and Germany. The rest, as they say, is history....

Great product. Arrived late; box is frequently smashed in transit

Was pretty good! - aside from expiring in 12 days :(
Delivery: came in 15 days from the UK! Which is a lot faster than the Amazon estimate of 1+ month. Bought on 5/4 and got on 5/19 when Amazon said 6/1-6/15. Taste: not bad for a 1st timer: maybe a tad too sweet though but I'd eat it again. I like marzipan with cake when it's done right. And this one is alright in my book! Safety and Quality: um, I gotta say given they shipped it at the earliest of 5/4 and the box said it was expiring 6/1 and Amazon said it'd arrive 6/1-6/15: NOT COOL. I also attached a picture. Sorry, I take quality and food safety pretty seriously. (We also get fired in California if we ever sell any expired dairy products or infant foods since an unfortunate infant died after ingesting expired baby formula.) Thankfully I got it 12 days before they expired but what if it did arrive 6/1? Or if I wanted to savor my snacks longer? So 2 stars off for that. But plus 1 star back for relatively quick, free shipping: I know international shipping is no bed of roses. So all in all, yes I'd be down to buy this product again from this vendor (Spellbound from England) - everyone deserves a 2nd chance. But fair warning: there might be a connection between this being the cheapest priced Battenburg on Amazon and the fact that they expire so soon... And to help out, I'll post if I do buy again and let you guys know what that expiration date is of the next Battenburg.

I ordered the 5-pack and the 230g loaf shoed up
I am a confirmed multi-time buyer of this wonderful 5-pack mini, so I ordered a pack when a family of four (with two little girls to whom I introduced Battenbergs over Christmas and fell in love with them). I was shocked and disappointed when the 230g loaf showed up in a mailing sleeve. It was unshakable and inedible. Sadly, there is a no-return policy, so I was stuck with some very expensive British garbage. If you can get the 5-pack in great condition from this company (as advertised), they are MARVELOUS!

Sugar, sugar, and more sugar
Super sugary! Made my teeth hurt they were so packed with sugar. I felt like I was going to get diabetes just from one bite.

First time trying this cake
This is my first experience with Battenbergs. Was attracted due to the combination of flavors: marzipan and apricot. So very good. The size of the cakes is about half the size of a Twinkie. So the value by US standards is low HOWEVER, this is no Twinkie. One of these with a cup of hot tea would do nicely for an afternoon snack or a dessert. My husband and I ate one apiece and it was plenty for us. The package has a total of 5 cakes. I would give these as a hostess gift, but frankly they would likely 'disappear' before that would happen. Total thumbs up on these and would purchase again as a just because thing.

These are listed as vegetarian, but be aware that they are not because of the cochineal food colouring.
