Powerful little guy works great for animators
Got my PC yesterday, I was so excited it felt like Christmas. The packaging was nice and set up was easy. I have a 3 monitor set up, had no issues connecting it to my monitors. I did experience issues connecting it to my KVM switch, but I haven’t isolated the issue so it could be my switch. I purchased the PC for animation. I use programs like Blender, After Effects, Adobe Character Animator, and Premiere pro. I’ve been struggling running the programs on my latitude 7240 and decided it was time to invest in an upgrade. The programs run so smooth on this mini PC, I could cry lol. the attached image is my CPU and GPU utilization while streaming a Wnba game and animating in blender. Needless to say the PC is unbothered. I imported a few large HQ 3D objects in blender to get an idea of how much this PC can handle. On my old laptop I couldn’t even display them in render view without blender crashing. On this mini PC they open smoothly and I can switch to material and render view effortlessly. i did run into 1 issue today. I was doing some very light work in Blender and all of a sudden the PC restarted. afterward I couldn’t open blender or the AMD performance monitoring software (it was saying it didn’t support my graphics card, which obviously isn’t the case since I had it running pre restart. both issues were indicative or a graphics card issue. I ended up updating the driver and problem solved. It reminded me to purchase the warranty though. I’ve worked in IT for almost 14 years and although I can tackle a lot of stuff myself, I know it’s always worth it to purchase protection. You never know what could happen. So far, i’m extremely happy with my purchase. I will update my review if I run into problems or in a few weeks/months.

First mini pc and glad I chose Minisforum
I never bought a mini pc before and this was the first time. I needed another pc to do work on with a smaller footprint so I decided to look into mini pcs. I researched a littlebit and the reason I chose this was for the 780m and the io ports these suit my needs perfectly. It also looks really great. Minisforum customer service is top notch. I have been using it on and off since I had to travel. I was experiencing bsod and random restarts and I only really began using it after Amazon return deadline. So i decided to contact Minisforum customer service. Their customer service provided me a few fixes to try, but in the end none worked. They told me to send the pc with all the original parts back and they would send me a new one after they confirmed everything. I did just that and only only 2days later I recieved a brand new updated unit! This unit is perfect no more bsod and random restarts. I have my trust in Minisforum now. Will definitely purchase another mini pc from Minisforum in the future if I need to!

Really love it but it constantly crashes
Got this a week ago. It is very fast and responsive but it would crash, freeze up, or reboot by itself without warning a few times a day (3 times already since this morning). I’m still trying to figure out whether it is a hardware issue or a software issue. I set it up as a dual boot Windows and Linux system (but I run Linux most of the time). I’ve invested a lot of time on it to install the software, so I hope it is not a hardware problem that I have to return it. Otherwise I love this little machine. Update: It is so unfortunate that I have to return it, after spending so much time trying to make it work. I’ve combed through the system log files to figure out what went wrong, but I’m unable to come up with a conclusion other than thinking that it is most likely a hardware issue. In just 5 days the computer had crashed more than 50 times. I’ve seen problems with Bluetooth and hard drive (most common), and the last time I witnessed that my screen flickered then emitted a high pitch noise that lasted a split second, but the computer continued to run until I shut it down. When I restarted the screen did not come up and the keyboard was frozen (cap lock would not respond). Then I did another hard shutdown, waited a few hours, but this time it restarted like normal. At this point I decided that the computer is hopeless so I wiped all personal info and reinstalled the system from scratch before requesting an Amazon return. I’m very disappointed with this product, so I took out two more stars.

Surprisingly powerful and Linux compatible
TLDR: The Minisforum UM790 Pro is a great little device with excellent Linux compatibility and surprisingly strong gaming chops for its price point. Recommended. I purchased the 64GB version of the UM790 Pro and I've had it for about two weeks. I've been happy with it so far. I run Kubuntu Linux on mine and I have not had any problems. Installation was a breeze with no unusual steps required. All ports seem to be working out of the box. I primarily use my UM790 Pro for web development and general productivity, and it excels at both. I switch between workspaces often and I keep multiple applications open at all times. No issues. I've tried a few games just to see how this little device handles them. It's pretty impressive for the price point. Wrath of the Righteous runs well at 1080P on medium settings and I suspect BG3 would be about the same. Older games and indie games run as smooth as you could ask for. Skull Girls runs like a dream, and I played Grim Dawn. At 2K on high. I could probably make 4K work if I wanted to spend some time optimizing the settings but, honestly, on a 27 inch monitor 2K is fine. So, is it comparable to a full tower with a 4060? No, of course not. But for it's size and price point I'm completely satisfied with the gaming performance of the UM790 Pro. I was concerned about fan noise on this machine when I bought it and I'd read mixed reviews. I'fe found it to be basically silent during normal operation and coding work. The fan does kick on during gaming and it's noticable but not excessive. The UM790 Pro offers a lot of value for the dollar and I'd recommend it to anyone in the market for a good Mini PC.

Awesome, powerful mini PC. Works best with Linux, and very capable as a server. This has plenty of power to handle multiple simultaneous transcoding operations, assuming you're working with a client that supports AMD transcoding well. Capable of running multiple VMs simultaneously for extended periods of time. Runs silent, but packs a lot of punch.

Comparing this Minisforum Venus UM790 Mini PC powered by a modern AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS with my old Dell notebook that have inside a 11th generation i9 (same number of cores and threads as this AMD), is like comparing a steam locomotive with a magnetic levitation train (silent and fast). The performance and extensibility of this mini PC is amazing: - two DDR5 slots - two PCIe 4.0 SSD slots - two USB-4 ports, 40 Gbps with PD (we can power this PC with an external 130W battery power bank !) - fast X86 integrated GPU and using the USB-4 ports we can control monster eGPUs like the Oculink ONEXGPU. Summary: What computer science wanted to see inside the ENIAC, VAX, and Cray computers, is now present inside this MiniPC.

fast system. faster for most tasks that 5600X can do, at fraction of power, however, i can not find full thunderbolt/usb4.0 drivers. have 2X other/unknown drivers, with no tech support. Will be getting refund in 10 business days if not fixed in that time. I cannot use my thunderbolt screen until i have those drivers, and have to use older screen which i hoped to have thrown it out by this time. Edit: Support finally got to me after 2 months. And at first they were great. I had 3 support emails going to and fro, sometimes at same time. Found out that Amazon description was wrong; the product did NOT include oculink OR Thunderbolt support, and only full usb 4.0 support on single port of the 2 on front. both usb c ports on front support data sticks, but only 1 port can electricly, and fully support 1 device that requires usb cables. I found this out by my own internet research. So, their support does NOT know their own products. Still a very great li'l system. After editing my review above, i decreased the stars again despite deciding to keep the system. Support was willing to replace with UM890 Pro. This impressed me, however, after i found out information about the system that they should have known, and should have made it more clear on the item description; i decreased it a further 2 stars. Oh -- and i still have those unknown drivers. They are described "all over the web" and on many oem and branded devices. None of the support sites have any idea how to deal with them, other than that windows simply does not need them, nor do any support site know why they are even unknown, as they appear as unknown even upon initial setup of each system; despite their numbers are easily found on driver sites. ...BUT i was able to upgrade my memory to 128GB. ran memory tests multiple times, no issues. working with this for 4 weeks tomoz doing metatrader, optimiser tests 24/7 for 4 weeks straight -- other than a restart on weekends. Hence keeping the 2 stars. Buyer be VERY AWARE. I also found out that there is no electrical certification with the brick, no stamp or sticker on the brick, which automaticly means that it cannot meet electrical standards in many countries. I have reported this item to amazon and regulator. If my place burns down, then this review will serve as evidence in my families legal proceedings against amazon and minisforum.
