Why do all the refills Amazon links to for this product say "standard refill" and only say Litter Genie and don't say "Plus" anywhere?

They sell regular, plus, and XL pails but they will all last exactly the same length of time because they only sell one length of bag refill, and that alone determines how long it lasts! The XL COULD hold more if there were longer bags, but litter genie doesn't sell any. I love the concept but I consider it serious false advertisement to claim a taller container will last longer with the same size bag. You can buy another brand of bags that have 21 ft long bags instead of the 14 ft length bags. They are Firik bags - fit the litter genie but are longer. I suggest you buy them. I do. Litter genie will probably delete this answer, but I prefer to tell the truth. I like the system, they should sell bags that fit what you pay for.

The product is okay and worth the price for the canister, but the refill bags are waaaaay overpriced! Pros: Pretty much comes assembled . Easy to use Cons: Refills are too expensive . Pulling out the bag takes a little practice . The scoop holder does not snap and hold into place . Awkward to open slide (takes two hands) . Awkward to open canister bottom (takes two hands) . Awkward to move around (takes two hands) . Awkward to pull down new bag (takes two hands) . Latch doesn't hold tight Now for my hacks to improve some features. 1. Place a weight in the bottom portion of the pail. Doing so will aid in the stability of product for opening bottom portion and pulling out the slide. This is a minor annoyance, but sometimes you just may not be able to use two hands all the time to perform some operations. 2. If you need to move your canister from room to room. You need to secure that cheap latch. Get yourself a couple a large size washer, a wingnut, and a screw. Make sure the screw fit the wingnut. Make sure the washer is large enough to cover the opening of the outside opening cutout. Drill a hole through the tab. Place a washer onto the screw. Push the screw and washer through the drilled hole. Place the second washer onto the screw. Thread the wingnut onto the screw. Now just tighten the wingnut and secure the top to the bottom. 3. Keep a used-up refill cartridge to use for wrapping a much less expensive bag around the cartridge. It's a little more inconvenient, but you can use other bags for a fraction of the cost of their product! 4. Place a "stick-up" on the underside of the top lid. I found if you remove the sticky tape from the stick-up, and replace it with a Velcro tab, then you can keep reusing the same stick-up holder. When you need to get a new stick-up just pull the scented product out and place it in the holder attached to your lid. 5. Buy a bag of small zip ties (4"). A bag cost about $5 bucks for 200. You can get 1000 for about $10 bucks on Amazon. Use the zip ties to close the ends of the bags. Before you go to cut your bag, place a z two zip ties about an inch or two apart. Zip them good and tight. Now cut the bag. The one you are disposing is good to go. The new pull-down bag is ready to be pulled down. I found you waste a smaller number of bags this way. 6. If you prefer to use other less expensive bags, I found wrapping the bag around the outside of the used cartridge works better and is more secure. That way the cartridge holder itself is holding the bag in place. Btw. There is a learning curve to finding the bag end. First time I pulled the bag down it was doubled up big waste! You must feel around to find the end. Once you find it, it is easy to pull out. Bottom line, yes, I recommend the product. Yes, the cartridges are overpriced, but they work. The canister does its job but is a little flimsy. This set-up works for me, because I live in a condo and making daily trips to the dumpster just wasn't getting it. Final thought: After reading all this nonsense, I realized I really need to get out more, maybe even find a girlfriend? Retired life must be getting to me! LOL Btw, any company that limits its customer to post reviews about their product, at best is a suspicious company and product!

does this come with a refill cartridge and a spatula for the litter and the holder like on other web sites

You know, I can't recall if it came with a refill cartridge so I'd say that if it doesn't list it in the description then it does not. I know that mine definitely came with the scooper and holder on the side, though I threw out the scooper and just used my metal one as I like it better than the plastic option. I just ordered a bunch of refills at the same time as I ordered the box. The refills may seem pricey, but so long as you are smart about how you use them they will go a long ways. I have two cats and have to change out the bag maybe once every one and a half to two weeks

any cheaper solutions than using the refills or?

We used the cartridges until we felt they were getting a bit pricy. We ended up searching for regular trash can bags to use. We've not found the perfect ones yet, but yes you can wrap the trash can bag around the empty cartridge and get it to work. I've started using doggie waste bags when I clean the litter, keep it twisted in the top part, wait until fill and tie it off every day or so and drop it down into the litter genie main compartment. Between the trash bag in place and the doggie bags, they both keeps the smell down. I don't think that the trash bags work as well as the cartridges did, but they are ok. The doggie waste bags are cheap and bought a case of them here on AMAZON inexpensively. We've talked about 3D printing an insert to replace the cartridge which would make it easier to attach the bag.
