I decided to upgrade my morning routine and give myself something to look forward to when I'm feeling lazy and thinking about sleeping in. I also felt like it was time to stop using an electric razor since it was leaving me with a very amateur-looking shave (lots of stray hairs that I couldn't get no matter how much I tried). I wanted to get the most out of the safety razor experience, so I did a lot of research into which products are needed and how to use them. I made all of the purchases together on Amazon and tried them out as a set. After using an electric for the past 10 years, I was pretty worried that I would get some serious razor burn, but to my surprise I had none whatsoever! I was pretty careful to not get too aggressive with the shaving, so I went WITH the grain and only made one or two passes on each area. The result was a shave that was 100X closer than an electric with no discomfort, nicks, cuts, or razor burn! Here's what I bought and why: Safety Razor: Parker 96R – Long Handle Butterfly Safety Razor https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002IFFSOS/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_2 This safety razor has a great weight to it, a long handle for a comfortable grip, and a black and chrome coloring that looks great with the other items on the list. The butterfly razors seem to be the easiest to open and close for changing blades. Razor Blades: Astra Superior Premium Platinum blades https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EXPTR0W/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_4 One of the great things about safety razors is that the blades are SUPER cheap. These Astra blades are some of the most popular and highest quality blades I could find. At $0.10 each, you can clearly see the cost advantage to regular razors. I have been told that one blade should last about a week. That means that 100 is nearly 2 years’ worth! Do yourself a favor and buy the best blades you can get. There’s no reason to save a few cents to get blades that dull quickly and give you razorburn. Brush: Perfecto 100% Badger Shaving Brush - Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VF1NI5M/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_40 This brush is a fraction of the cost of the higher end brushes and it felt GREAT and worked up a nice, foamy lather very quickly. I don’t see any reason to buy a more expensive brush, especially if you are just starting out and want to see if you enjoy this process before you commit to a high-dollar brush. Personally, I still wouldn’t get anything more expensive. Bowl: Schöne Stainless Steel Shaving Bowl with Lid https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OQDEL8Y/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_37 I think this is a matter of preference and taste in aesthetics. This bowl matches the other items that I bought and has a lid, which I am hoping will allow me to make my soap last longer. It seems to be well made and is a great size for working up a lather with the brush and is shaped well for holding it in your hand while you apply the lather. I think there are a lot of options for you to choose from, so pick something that matches your style if this one isn’t for you. Razor and Brush Stand: SimplyBeautiful Deluxe Razor and Brush Stand https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AG92BXY/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_35 This stand looks great and is balanced well so that it holds my brush and razor without falling over. I chose black for two reasons. One: It matches the other things that I bought (razor and brush). Two: It should resist rusting better since it is coated. Pre-shave Oil: The Art of Shaving Pre-Shave Oil, Sandalwood https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000FGTTTM/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_3 The Art of Shaving makes some great products, but some of them have changes in recent years, so you can’t rely on the ratings alone. I read through them and found that the pre-shave oil is still a very popular product and from my experience, it definitely helps prep your beard and skin for the shave. Applying the oil is step 1 in safety razor shaving. Shaving Soap: Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood Shaving https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0007MW2ZW/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_1 TOBS shaving soaps are the highest quality soaps I could find based off of smell, quality of lather, and consistency of the product quality. This soap is more like a cream. I scooped out some with my fingers, put it in the bowl, added some hot water, and then worked up a lather. It felt and smelled amazing! In reality, I didn’t want to wash it off because it just felt so good! After-shave Balm: Truefitt & Hill Sandalwood Aftershave Balm https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004OWPW0I/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_29 This was my biggest splurge of the whole set-up and I did so for several reasons: First, using after-shave balm is said to be gentler on your skin than alcohol-based after-shaves. As I mentioned before, I switched from an electric to a safety razor with no skin irritation at all. This cream soothes the skin and makes it soft. It was the perfect way to finish my shave. Second, this stuff is rated as the absolutely best smelling after-shave balm out there and I can attest to that. It smells so great that I stopped using my cologne. Based on the small amount that is needed, this bottle should easily last for a year or more. Three, there are other “luxury” brand shaving balms that have been bought out by big brand companies and their formulas have changed significantly as a result. That means that some of the products out there have great ratings, but only because of the number ratings BEFORE they recently changed. If you look into other luxury shaving brands, then you will see what I mean. Razor Disposal Case: Feather Styling Razor Disposal Case https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DWGEY1K/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_36 Even used razors are sharp, so I bought this little case to keep stray razors off of the counter, or better yet, off of the floor. Just drop in the used razor when it’s too dull for shaving. It holds over a hundred, so you can go without emptying it for a few years. It’s pretty cheap, so maybe you can just throw it away when it’s full? Your choice. That’s my whole set up. If you want to get into safety razor shaving, then I highly recommend the products on this list. All-in-all, you will spend about the same on this list than you would on a TAOS starter kit that only has the oil, brush, soap, and balm. I’m a morning shaver, so the sandalwood scent works great for me, but evening shavers may consider the same products in lavender scent if you want a relaxing experience to help you sleep.

First, I want to say that "Pop!Shop" did an awesome job, with amazon, in taking my order and processing it! I ordered on August 5th and it was delivered on August 8th. By the way, for those of you who prefer receiving an order at your post office box mailing address, rather than at home or the office, they DO ship to a post office mailing address! Ok... My review. I am as blunt and outspoken as the Republican candidate seeking the nomination, if you saw the first GOP debate. The 'Perfecto' shaving brush is just as my headline states, "perfection." As soon as I opened the box containing both the shaving brush and the Perfecto chrome shaving stand I knew that I received high quality products. Best of all, both were reasonably priced. If you have read any of my other reviews, "You get what you pay for." most of the time and Perfecto along with 'Pop!Shop' and Amazon delivered just what I paid for, good quality products and at a good price. The shaving brush, in my opinion, is REAL badger hair or some other animal hair. Personally, I have never petted a badger! However, the hair (bristles) are very soft. My wife saw me open the box and asked if she could use it to apply make-up. I think another reviewer said they use it for the same purpose. Anyway, I told my wife she would need to get her own. We all come to Amazon for research before purchasing a product, whether it is through Amazon or elsewhere. I can tell you that the shaving brush is what I recall from my first experience wet shaving when my father gave me my first razor, shaving brush and shaving bowl. Perfecto has brought back what went by the way side as our society became oriented to "throw away" consumer goods, as I was one of those consumers caught up in the hype of cartridge type razors, etc.. Chalk that up to a tight class schedule in college!!!! Another reviewer wrote that they experienced some "shedding" when they first used the brush. I also experienced the same. However, the shedding I observed from the brush was maybe 3 or 4 hairs (bristles), a combination found in the sink, my face and my beautiful BALD head. I would think that this is to be expected the first few times using the brush, as someone stated in another review it is the "break-in" period. I wrote a review about another shaving brush included in a kit I bought at one of the popular brick and mortar discount stores. (I had decided that I wanted to return to my "roots" as a kid growing up when I was truly wet shaving.) The brush that was included in the kit was no where near the quality of the Perfecto shaving brush. The bristles (hair) were coarse, very stiff, especially, compared to the Perfecto shaving brush. The brush lost a lot of bristles, continuously, from the first day of use. Sometimes there were "clumps" of bristles in the sink. It was that bad! That brush now thrown away lasted a year. I think that I will get several good years of use from the Perfecto shaving brush. In my opinion it is really that good. By the way, just because a product may be the "Number 1 Seller" does not always mean it is the best value. You should consider all aspects of a product and not just the selling price. Anyway, like all good things, as good as the Perfecto shaving brush is, it will eventually wear out. Here's a tip to extend the life of any shaving brush. When rinsing the soap from a brush, use cold or maybe lukewarm water. Hold the brush in the palm of your hand. Rinse the brush on one side. Then lift the brush, turn it slightly and again rest the brush in the palm of your hand and rinse. Do this until the brush has been completely rotated and rinsed. After rinsing the brush, holding the brush handle with the hair (bristles) pointed down in the sink just shake (flicker) the brush lightly from side to side to remove the bulk of the water. Then place the brush in a holder, hanging upside down from the handle. This will allow the brush to properly "air dry" without distorting the brush's hair. Buy it! You will love it! I actually look forward to shaving again!!

The Perfecto pure badger hair brush offers an excellent shaving experience. It has a good balance of firmness and softness, ideal for gently exfoliating the skin and lifting the beard. It easily lathers with both creams and soaps. The black handle is comfortable and feels solid in the hand. Highly recommended if you're looking for a quality brush without breaking the bank, whether using a safety razor, straight razor, or cartridge razor.

Long ago I started occasionally shaving with shave soaps, but I hand lathered (i.e. I did not get much of a lather at all). It worked fine because for the past 25 years I've either had a beard or a goatee and my cheeks are pretty tough. However, I always wanted to try the brush experience: 1) I wanted the true experience of using shave soap, and 2) I have memories of visiting my maternal grandfather's house (he was born in 1903) and he always had a mug and shaving brush on his bathroom sink and I thought it was a very interesting idea. About 6 weeks ago, I started shaving my entire beard again (too much gray). After 25 years of having a beard or goatee, I found that the little spot under my nose, and the soft, fleshy spot under my lower lip and above my chin would get very sore and red when shaving. I decided it was time to do something and started my research. Now, I use a pre-shave oil, a brush, and a good shave soap or cream (TOBS) and find that the redness and irritation go away almost completely. For anyone considering a more traditional shave, I can't recommend it enough. That said, what about this brush? Is it any good? While I have only had it for about 3 weeks, I am quite happy with it. I also bought the Miusco 100% Pure Badger Hair Shaving Brush and Luxury Stand Shaving Set, Dark Chrome Stand (https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01G2W5N9M/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1) at about the same time so I can compare it to another brush. I figured I'd alternate the Perfecto and Miusco brushes and give each one a day to dry out and extend their lifespan (I hadn't yet done any research on the longevity of shaving brushes- had I done so I might have still bought a 2nd brush but went with a silvertip, or boar, or synthetic for the 2nd brush for a slightly different experience). Compared to the Perfecto I am very disappointed in the Miusco. The Perfecto may have lost one or two hairs the first time I used it (apparently common with badger brushes), but that ended quickly, something I can't say with the Miusco. The look and feel of the Perfecto just seem to be decidedly higher quality than the Miusco, despite both being budget friendly brushes. It may be my imagination, but I even think the Perfecto makes lathering my soaps easier than the Miusco. Overall, I rate this Perfecto brush highly. It makes it easy to lather, it is comfortable on the face, it doesn't shed for very long at all, and the feel and balance in the hand are just right. To top it off, the two-tone natural badger hair, silver ring, and semi-gloss black finish make for a beautiful brush that looks great on my bathroom sink. This brush is well made, it makes for an extremely comfortable shave (especially when paired with a proper prep), and as an added bonus, I feel a little closer to my grandfather who died when I was 11 every time I use it. I'm very happy with this purchase!
