The Only One Left: the chilling, gripping novel from the master of the genre-bending thriller

This book was so great I couldn’t put it down. It just made me want to know more and figure out what happened. I totally recommend this book for people who love mysteries.

とてもユニークで、プロットも意外性があり、面白かったです。ただ、姉妹で何故早く話し合いをしなかったのか、必然性がよくわからなくて、ストーリーとしては面白かったけど、人間の心理描写の点で、物足りない部分がありました。

I recommended it to one member of our reading group. I basically read it all the time whenever I had spare time.

金持ちの老婦人の専属介護人として雇われた主人公。ゴシックロマンの舞台を思わせる奇怪な屋敷を舞台として、途中までは読ませます。英語力弱い評者としては、文体がやさしく、登場人物、舞台が限定され、時間軸も前後しないので、読みやすいのはありがたいですね。肝心の謎解きですが、意外といえば意外ですが、現実感は薄いです。特に主人公の前任の介護人が何故行方不明になったのか、動機は弱いですね。 種明かしになるので控えますが、この種の犯人が登場するのは、個人的には好みではないですね。

断崖に建つ世俗から離れた館で1929年に惨劇が起きた。ホープ家の夫妻と娘たち二人のうち一人が殺され、一人生き残った１７歳の娘レノーラは口もきけず左手指が動くだけの車椅子生活で以降５４年間を過ごしている。世間では残ったレノーラが殺人犯だと言われて、そのため誰も館に近づかない。ミセス・ベーカーという７０歳すぎの怖い家政婦がすべてを取り仕切り、女中、料理人、庭師の毎日だった。突然住み込みの看護師メアリがなんの前触れもなく私物一切を残したまま姿を消し平穏が破られた。急遽送り込まれたのがベテラン看護師キット・マクディーアだが、彼女は訳ありの人物ながら初日から館で蠢くおどろおどろしい音や振動に怯える。レノーラを介護するうちにキットは５４年前の事件の真相を探り始めた。犯人はレノーラではないと思い始めるとこんどは知りすぎた自分の身が危ない！ オカルトめいた仕立てで複雑な人間関係を持ち出しておいてびっくりの犯人登場という、初めての著者訪問だったが多分こういった複雑なプロットを得意としているのだろう。前半のスローペースを受け入れて読み進めると良い味を噛みしめることができた。
