If you're a smoker and you smoke in your car, or even just outside while it's dark, this is a great product. The blue light lets you know where you want to drop your ashes, and the snuffer is perfect for making sure your butt is out before you drop it in, unlike some other options out there where you just drop your lit butt into it and it smolder, smokes, lights up other butts and smells up your car forever. The solar aspect means never having to worry about putting in a new battery to keep the light going.This is my third one of these, they seem to last about 2 years or so before the banging around in the car, tapping when you empty it and general wear & tear keep the light from going on all the time when the lid is lifted. I think that's a perfectly adequate expectation for life expectancy on a product such as this, and you may get longer use from it if you don't bang it against the side of a trash can when you empty it like I do.The only thing I don't care for much is the snuffer area has a tendency to get clogged up when the cherry breaks off your cig and stays in the snuffer hole. I have a pen in my car that fits the snuffer hole and knocks it clear again, but that can be tricky to do while you drive. Not sure if there is anything that can be done about that, but it doesn't even take away a star...it's just one of those smokers facts of life.Of available car ashtrays, and lighted ones in particular, this Car Mate Solar Ash Tray is hands down the best one on the market, IMO. There are a few cheap imitations out there, and you'll get annoyed with them and wind up having to replace them in weeks or months, so go ahead and spend the extra 3 bucks and get the best one instead, you won't be sorry you did.***Just a note to other car smokers - if you aren't using an ashtray now, and just toss your butts out the window, PLEASE DON'T! There are all the environmental reasons, and out west that includes the serious risk of causing a wild fire. With all the traffic cams and whatnot out there, if they find out YOUR butt caused a wildfire, you'll be ruined for life! In CA, if you get caught tossing a butt out your window, it's a VERY expensive ticket PLUS a minimum of a full day of community service on top of paying the ticket, and at least 2 trips to court. Truly not worth it, especially when there are easy to use and cheap to buy options like this instead.

Not a good fit in the cup holder, wasn't quite high enough and then it wouldn't stay lit, glad I didn't pay a lot of money for it, switched to a regular ashtray in a small compartment in my car, may work for others but not for me.

I purchased the ashtray over a year ago. I use it every night. Still functions 100%. The led light is still bright. No issues. Love this ashtray!

Fits nicely into a cup holder and the lighted lid when fully open is a God-send at night. My only reason for a 4 star is that the light under the lid protrudes down and if, like I do, you put a cigar onto the ashtry lip and close down on the lid so the lid holds the cigar parallel, then the plastic over the bulb can melt. Still, no worry, for the price I'll get another one when the time comes.UPDATE Jan 2012 - Time for a new one. The plastic over the bulb melted and inside lid got totally covered in nicotene (as expected) and hard to get off. This is not a gripe as for the price it is wonderful. This time I'll buy 2 and keep one for later in case the product is discontinued..

I keep this in my car because I don't want to use the cars ashtray which was cluttered with cords. At first it worked well, meaning the LED was nice and bright for as long as it took to smoke a cigarette. However, after a few months I found that the LED begins to dim within 30 seconds of opening the lid. By the time the cigarette is done, its very very dim. One caveat: originally I found it annoying that I couldn't snub out my cig and had to drop it into the holder to burn out. Smoke didn't escape through the lid, but I felt uncomfortable with doing that. My solution was to fill it up 1/2 way with sand. That way I can snub out the cig and then stick it in the sand. It's easy enough to throw the butts away when it gets crowded and a hand vac does a great job of sucking up the lighter ashes and leaving the heavier sand in place.

The Car Mate Solar Powered LED Ash Tray is much better than the old hole in the middle one I used before.I didn't think I needed this but Mrs. B. said it was a must as she was tired of the dirty ash covered old one.After using it, I am glad she insisted. This one keeps the cigarette ashes inside so I don't have the fan or anopen window blowing ashes from the cover onto the seats and dash.Looks a heck of a lot nicer in my new truck too.I like the the addition of the LED light and don't miss my old ashtray at all.Best of all, the Mrs. is happy.~ The Boss

One of the best car ashtrays hands down, light works as intended, enough space so it don't fill fast and great price.

You have to keep the cigarette in the snuffer hole for quite a while before it goes out. This doesn't work well if you have more than 1 person smoking. At one point, the butts caught on fire because a cigarette wasn't all the way out and it started smoking pretty heavily. There should be a place to put the cigarette out instead of having to put it in the snuffer. The light works well, but a lot of times I leave the cigarette in the snuffer hole for long periods of time so I don't have to wait for it to go out and the light runs out of power. It does serve its purpose, but I think there are much better options out there like ones that you can just drop the butts in and not have to worry about it.
