I am having an extremely hard time sliding the two parts together. Is there a trick to it? It doesn't want to slide together beyond 12" nor snap.

I had the same problem . It doesn't slide very well , and has a real snug fit . The way I do it is peel the center piece apart and lay my cables down on the bottom peace and just snap it together. It takes some time , but I will say they work great for me. Good luck.

I rent and want to put this on the hardwood floors. Will I be able to remove the adhesive when I move out or is this meant to be a semi-permanent?

Yes, just get some WD-40 spray and a plastic putty scraper and you will be able to remove it in no time. the tape is the foam, double-sided tape in Qty 2 of 1/2" wide each. I never taped mine to the floor because they are in low traffic areas.

I have a thick power cable, and 5x 12-gauge speaker wires I need to hide. Will this fit all 6 of these wires? Or another product?

I had a thick power cable for my belkin power strip and it BARELY fit. As in, it took me 15 minutes to put the two parts of the shield back together. I can take a cross-sectional photo next to a ruler if you want to see some exact measurements.
