This is a great book; super helpful and a wonderful resource on pretty much every topic you’ll ever need and that you can always go back to as your baby ages. You should know that the authors have very strong opinions on parenting that they definitely advocate for, but that’s the whole point of the book! This book is for parents who are confused about conflicting advice on really important issues that directly affect development, and this book will point you in the right direction. Because of the huge range of topics, as well as the science-backed advise, I would say that this book is absolutely necessary for every new parent. However, there is one bit of information in this book that I don’t agree with, and that’s the advise to never wake a sleeping baby. This advise can be followed most of the time, but when a baby has just been born, sometimes they are not strong enough to wake themselves up enough to feed as often as they need to. I made this mistake when I first gave birth, and it lead to my perfectly healthy and responsive baby losing too much weight and almost becoming dehydrated, which is very dangerous! The medical information advised by my Pediatrician is that newborns should not go longer than 2-3 hours from the onset of their last feeding before feeding them again, so babies WILL need to be woken up to eat. However, this only needs to be followed until babies pass their birth weight and are developing appropriately, so it’s usually only for the first 2 weeks. I’m sure this information is skipped over in the book just because it pertains to such a short period of time in a baby’s life, but I think it’s important to warn new parents nonetheless!

The Baby Book is and excellent source for new parents. It covers just about every aspect you will need to know about from birth to 2 years of age. Our daughter is now 16 months old, and I still refer to this book (which we got when she was born). It has saved us a few trips to the paediatrician, and helped us on many occasion. The only part I found a little out-dated/ disagreed with, is the part about the "first foods/purees", bit this is a small part, and quite honestly, a personal opinion. Do yourself a favour and get this book, it is well worth the money spent. It also helped us get some good sleep. But if you need more info, I would highly recommend the others Sears books as well, like the Baby Sleep book and the Portable Paediatrician. Dr Sears and his wife have 7 (or 8, I lose count, sorry) kids of their own, and have many insights to share, however, they do not impose their opinion on you - you are presented with the facts and ideas, and are open to try your own parenting style and listen to your own instincts. The writing style is in a light-hearted manner, and quite enjoyable to read. Brilliant book! I am about to buy a copy for a friend of mine having a baby soon.

I highly recommend this book as well as many others from the Sears parenting library - They provide down to earth practical advise that gives people the confidence to care for their babies/children in a way that is instinctive, natural and loving. Reading this book puts you in touch with your gut feelings such as: It is OK to respond to your babies cries by picking her/him up, by cuddling, carrying, and by breastfeeding a newborn as many times as you want. You do not need to keep to fixed rigid routines if that does not come naturally to you - or structure your life around on the dot 3 hourly feeds. You do not need to let your baby cry it out or 'Train' him/her to behave in a particular way at such a young age. You can sleep next to your baby if you want to and go about it safely. You do not need to listen to 'advice' that does not feel natural to you. Parenting is a personal choice and everyone is different. This book does not rigidly tell you how to parent but instead has a very open-mind on many subjects. I highly recommend this to anyone about to have a baby or of course anyone already with a baby - especially those of you who are quite fed up of hearing advice that does not feel right. The Sears family are the main advocates of 'Attachment Parenting' BUT they are also highly qualified doctors and medical practitioners with a lot of experience - And everything is backed up scientifically. The attachment parenting philosophy is a whole approach/concept to bringing up your child, not a list of things you absolutely must do. Please therefore do not be put off if you feel you do not fit into this philosophy simply because you don't want to carry your baby in a sling everywhere you go or perhaps you don't breastfeed - It doesn't matter - In fact the book has a section called 'Bottle Feeding with Love'. Although I think it is worth every penny - If the price puts you off then buy an older version of this book (also on Amazon) which may not be so up do date in some areas of detail but the general content, philosophy & chapter headings appear to be pretty much the same!
